Wornan to Woman
First off, I' want to apologize
to the couple that was getting
• the calls for the weight control
club last. Thursday.
I'tn to blame for the error. I
.checked the copy for last week's
,'newspaper and found that the
-telephone number I typed in the
story which appeared on . the
back page of the second section
was incorrect. ?lease forgive me,
all those who .were
inconvenienced in any way.
Apparently there was quite a
bit of interest in the. group
where losing weight is the major
interest. Judging from the
number of calls taken by the
,folks who were unfortunate
enough to get the calls intended
° for someone else, there is
perhaps more interest than was
shown at the meeting: '
Incidentally, I did 'get over. to
the meeting and submitted to
the weighing in session. Really,
it wasn't as bad as I had
suspected•it would be.
In order to become a member
of the club (which still has no
' name, by the way) it is necessary
to be ..at least 10 pounds
overweigh .-._.and _. to .:-hake a°
• .doter% certificate signifying it
is safe to attempt to -reduce your
weight.
It is also understood that at,
future meetings there will be an
exercise period which should be
helpful to some of us..ou must
have: a doctor's permission to
participate. ,
I believe that Thursday.
evening (tonight) is .the time for_
the next meeting. If you want
more particulars, I would suggest
that .you telephone (and this
number I promise is the correct
one) 524-9193.

• I had a telephone call
Thursday , from Bill Cameron,
music supervisor in the Goderich
elementary schools advising me
that he was not at all happy with
m comments in last week's
column .regarding the
"haphazard" music courses • in
area schools. -
In our telephone
conversation, Mr. Camerdn
asked me -what information I
had at my fingertips that
enabled me to. make such- a
"sweeping statement."
First of all, I'd like to point m
out that at one point in y
career .I taught elementary
school in Huron County. It
'wasn't the highlight of my life
and I like to forget just how
badly I really botched things up.
• but needless to . say, I learned
that not all schools in Huron
County have the. same
• opportunities. '
Fortunately for the students
in Goderich elementary schools, •
there is a fairly 'comprehensive
music program going on here ..."
but I must hasten to add that
Goderich elementary schools are
the exception and' not 'the rule.
I think that after sitting; in on
Huron County Board of
Education " ryieetings for about
one year now,' I can safely say
that the music program in the
majority of Huron. " County
schools — elementary , and
secondary — is still far below the
•program offered in other areas
of the province.
It is also true, I believe, that
elementary schools have at much
better musical program than the
secondary schools. All.
elementary schools, I believe,
have the services- of amusic
supervisor, who gives training in •
the field of music. However, in
, some cases it is not the in-depth
,kind of study which is available
in some schools in Ontario.
At the secondary school level
in the county, music is not an
.important subject. In most cases,
the music program is directed, by
a teacher or teachers interested
in the musical education of the
student body. Usually, such
music instruction is given as :an,
extra -curricular activity.
Speaking . to John Stringer;
principal of GDCI, I learned that
a music option •ha's been offered
at •GDCI at various times• but
that there has never been
sufficient interest among the
students to warrant setting .up a
music course at the school. As
Mr. Stringer pointed out, there
have to be enough students
interested at the grade 9 level to
- assurer_ . that ,_. there will be
st'ifficient students still enrolled
in music at the Grade 12 level.
"It is purely a matter - of
economics," admitted Mr..
Stringer who also expressed
some disappointnent that a•
music option has never worked
out at GDCI.

And in all fairness to Mr
Cameron, I must also state tha
music education in Goderich
elementary schools is as good,
perhaps better, than you wit
find anywhere else - in the
county.
My. ' intention was not `'to
discredit the 'music 'supervisors in
Huron Comity, but rather . to
point • out that a complete
musical education, in - schoo
leading to credits much the same
as ...students can earn in
mathematics or History, is
almost non-existent — certainly
haphazard. , •
* *'*
It was p.articulairly
disappointing to me last Tuesday
evening to'. see . such a ' few
persons out to attend the public
meeting regarding the
establishmene of a youth
program in Goderich. -
Judging from the number of
telephone calls and comments I
had ' regarding the matter., I
would have expected a much
better showing of interested
adults. I do know that there
were, sexeral conflicting events
going on that evening; but still.I
hoped , that more Goderich
parents would have made a real
effort td get out to express their
opinion on matters pertaining to
our teenagers. .
Is this ,perhaps an' indication
of the reasons why so many
young people " today are
confused and rebellious? Do
adults really " not care what
happens to -the kids?
