at the home of the president,

The annual Convocation of
Knox College, Toronto, a
seminary of the Presbyterian
Church in Canada, was held on
Tuesday evening, May 5, in
ConvocationHall, University of
Toronto. One minister honoured
at this ingathering of the
Presbyterian clergy was the, Rev.
William Weir, , B.A., B.D.,
p'resen•tly minister of
congregations at Elora and
Alma,' and unliil recently
minister of Knox Church,
Stratford,
The newly created Doctor of
Divinity is a Goderich boy, p-nd
carne to this Lake Huron town
prior to World War I from his
native Scotland. Throughout the
years he has increased and
improved his links with this
county seat and is, remembered
well as an outstanding baseball
player.
After some years in the
business world, with the Purity
Flour Company, the Merchants'
Bank, in Goderich, Ingersoll and
Toronto, Bill Weir ,entered the
University of Toronto in 1930.
Ile graduated in 1933 and
proceeded forward to studies at
Knox College in preparation for
the Ministry of the Presbyterian
Church in Canada. In 1936 he
was ordained ''and began his
active and long . Ministry at,
Huntsville, Ontario. While in
Huntsville he married his,wife,
Jean, and just prior to World

War II removed to Portage la.
Prairie in Manitoba. The loss of
his father, Fred' Weir, a beloved
member of the *'Goderieh
community, on; the first day of
World War Il in the sinking of
the steamship "Athenia" by a
German ,U -Boat, brought about
his returto Ontario. He settled
at Hensall and remained in that
pastorate for four years. In 1944.
he moved t� Hespeler and in,
1948 began his 12 -year n'linistry
in Brampton. In 1961.he was
called to' Knox Church,
Stratford, and remained there
until March 1st of this present
year.
During his 34 years as a
Presbyterian Minister Di. Weir
has served his. church, both
locally and nationally; in
superior fashion. He has given
time lo most of the Boards anti,
until his sickness in August,
1968, was Vice Chairman of the
Administrative Council. The
next time he is in town his'many
friends may address him as Dr.
Weir even if 'later they tumble
intp the more familiar Bill. His
mother, .Mrs.. ,Fred Weir, 'still°
resides in the family home on
East Street and is proud• of this
honour. which has come to her
only son.
