Memorial: • Sehool were given a
preview of the senior assembly
being held Friday 'afternoon for
VadeS seven and eight, their
Parents . and .friends,.
It was an excellent idea to
give. the . whole school an
opportunity to hear 'the band,
the wee Cluband to see the
plays put on by the drama club.
Afterwards, all the guests were
invited to, view the science
prujeets on, displayin the hall.
---The band played" _several
hlr}, ..and,-,.G.h.Gfls" Senior
`Choir, sang, "Seek First the
Kingdom", "It's a Long Road to
Freedom"; and "The Wedding
Banquet". A trophy for Mr.
chade's snow sculpture, and the
volleyball tabs for the winning
boys' and girls' teams, were
handed out.
The first . play the audience
Witnel was "Bringing up -
Junior". It told the. *story of .a
young boy who created mischief
by_reading his Mother's favourite
book, "Dr, }whey's Guide for
Parents"; which stressed that the
newest child psychology ryas not
to punish children ,for their
wrongdoings. Junior took
delight in disturbing his sister
and brother by destroying their
possessions, but took . special
care riot ti.. touch his mother's.
One fateful day, . however, he
made the error of mistaking her
new feather hat for sister Mary's,
and ruined it to make an Indian
headdress. Consequently, you—
can
oucan guess t "end" result—his
mother useie famous book to
relieve her ,frustrations!
The second play, "Here
Comes the Bride", was also
humorous. It described how . a
college boy had to dress up as
hid pal's bride; because Mr. and

Mrs. William Winters, the
groom's aunt and uncle, were to
meet the alleged bride for the
first time• After the relatives saw
the "bride's"' large shoes, they
knew something- was up, and
when fourteen teabags were used
for two cups 'of tea, more was
suspected. The audience .roared,
however; when the "bride" lost
her skirt, revealing 'blue jeans.
The hoax was up!
' Those taking part in the
plays, were Jay To
Sherry Boyce, Pauline Schwarz,
Micky `Oru lkshank, Bonnie. _
White-°Errrie McMillan, -Bob,.
Barlow, Graham Royal, Nina
Knight, and `Stephen Smith. The
director was Miss Aldous.
We , all ' appreciated the
performers' efforts, so thanks •
for making Thursday and Friday

True, it could be the exatrn-
ple of their elders that dared
the youngsters. to steal th
puffs, or even. that, of a. peer
group, unfortunately, already
wise in the ways of lighting up.
More than likely, however,
it is tobacco advertising -- of
the kind that" equates smoking
with adulthood,. or with thq so-
cial graces, or even with Aril
ity and glamor, all qualities
desired by the young. And as
youngsters are potentially life -

statistics alone over the last
15 years, chances of dying
from rung cancer have been on
the rise.
Mortality rates jumped from
18.4 per 100,0¢0 population in
1951 to 39.1 in 1966 — an in-
crease of 113 per cent. Signifi-
cantly, upward of 75 per cent
of the most widespread - lung
form — epidermoid cancer —
has been linked to .smoking.

all the cancers, lung cancer
takes the highest'toll in male
lives, with about 50,000 men
perishing from it, yearly.
But that some. 10,000 women
also die from it each year, and
that the disease, more and
more, is snuffing out women's
lives are facts that the junior

well to ponder upon. For them,
in particular, the risk of lung
cancer is lessened easiest --
simply by not smoking. •

Health Orga ization, and in

quently to treat. Others how -
,ever, more easily detected, are
more easily" treated arid cured.
Through chemotherapy, for
instance, almost all° skin can-
cers are curable,, as are breast

cancers, through surgery. And
the' Pap test makes possible
an almost 100 .per cent cure -
rate for uterine ;.ancer,-the No.
1 cause of all cancer deaths
among U. S. women- only 25
years ago.
Indeed not only through
drugs and surgery but also
through radiology, physical ex-
ams, and screening techniques,
more than 50 per cent of all
caner patients could 'be cur-
ed — provided; WHO holds,
the disease is detected earliY
enough.
It is early detection, .above
all, that WHO is stressing dur-
ing -the- year, doing so through
a .theme that hopefully pro-
claims that the "Early Detec-
tion of Cancer Saves Lives."
