Not many Canadians arta
aware ,of it,. but summer time,
which started officially last
weekend, was first introduced
into Canada by a Goderich man,
the late Judge E.4l. Lewis:
,,Judge Lewis was first elected
to the 'House of Commons as a
Conservative member,. in .1903
and introduced the bill for "fast
time" as it was then called, in
1905. It was regarded as a joke.
by members of the House. •
- The -previous -year ..a similar
-bill had ' been introduced in
England and this fact helped the;
efforts .of Judge" Lewis and his
bill was given two readings -and
referred to a special corrrtriittee
Although favorably reviewed by
the committee, the Lewis bill ,-
did not gain further recognitionuntil-1911 and the Reciprocity
Campaign. •

Daylight time 'was, ,.first
pled, --in 1618 ' -
both Canada and the United
States. Britain had adopted the
system in 1916 and whip the
United States repealed the law in
1919, many border communities
continued to usethe system.and
in. Canada the system became
widely used.
NNIMmium
But even now there is
opposition to it, 'particularly by,
agriculturalists. Die Canadian
Federation of -Agriculture,tried
to have Daylight Time abolished
altogether in 1959 and the

Ontario Goverrent has refused
to set any date that would .be'o•

- He introduced a bill in the
Ontario Legislature April 20 that
