I am happy to report this
• week. that there WILL be' .a
babysitting' course this fall for
budding babysitters in Goderich..
I understand that .the- Dinettes
will, offer this service beginning
inptember or October.
Of course, thedetails for ,the
program tare' not yet -completed
but I understand from one of
the Kinettes'that the group has
been in touch with another club
which has sponsored a course for
babysitters' similar to the one
suggested for this town.
I know it isn't wise for
newcomers to make proposals.
about ' anything involving
established service clubs; but I
would like to suggest that the
Dinettes give some thought to
including a bit of personal good
grooming advice m the course to
• be offered.
Somehow or other, many
young people do not seem to be
aware of the proper attitudes to
display when looking for work.

you think that a babysitter
should be 'expected to wash the
dishes or tidy up the livingroom
after a romping good time with
the kids?
- I would ` also. tike to- know
what beefs babysitteis have with

what they were we would be in 'a

babysitters encounter.

I have .. also suggested ' a

which parents could select a

Community , Concert goers last
Tuesday evening,. It is really ---
difficult to understand how
seasoned performers could
simply walk out on a ow, no
matter how insignificant the
perfortnance seemed to them or
how primitive the stage facilities.
I understand a few more of
the details behind the
disappointment after speaking
Monday morning with Mrs.
Clayton Edward.
Mr& Edward 'assured me that
the executive of the Community
Concert 'association in Goderich
had complied with all the
requirements when they booked
the First Chamber -Dance Troupe.
... nto.oderich., _She .tokLme.that
she- and Rill Cameron of' -the
p bl'icity • committee; had
measured'. the stage in the big
auditorium at GDCI last June.
All _ those measurements were
sent to the Community Concert
organizers- ' in . Ottawa-- and
aceardina.so--
Goderieh executive felt 'certain
that everything was satisfactory.
When the dancers arrived at
the school last Tuesday evening
at " 20 minutes to six, they
looked at the stage and decided
it was not suitable for their
Leger iormance.
The spokesman for the group -
said he -wouldn't "entrust life
and limb" of theedancers on the
stage because it w too chaliow
and the floor had been treated
with somel itg or other -that
apparently. lade the stage
surface too slippery for dancing.
Mrs. Edward suggested to the
dancers that they could modify
their program for just this one

I know they . will not be
disappointed by the'response.
' Incidentally, I've heard from
some mothers that girls who
completed the last babysitting
course . held in Goderich found it
difficult to get jobs because their
prices were a little high. Is there
anyone who can enlighten us
o more on this subject?
I was told that some
babysitters who had completed
the course where asking $1 per
hour straight through. That does
teem a little expensive when one
considers that an average evening
out would be about five hours
long. If folks with 'children had
to pay out five dollars in
• addition to the ten or fifteen
dollars they spend on
entertainment in an evening, it
wouldn't be. • much wonder if
parents elected to stay home
rather than to hire a babysitter
and go out.
It is always the young people
who need . babysittevs because
obviously,` they are the people
who : have ' young children. •
Generally, young people are also .•
struggling to pay ,for` a house,
furniture, perhaps a car and all
the other day to " day expenses
leaving only a meagre budget for
entertainment.
It seems to me , that
babysitters must understand the
• fact that young parents cannot
, spend large amounts• on
babysitting services. Instead,
most parents prefer to treat a
•babysitter like one of thelamily.
''They try to have the children
either in bed or ready for bed
when the sitter arrives. They
make, certain the cupboards and
the frig are stocked with some of
• the babysitters's favourite foods.
They permit the sitter to use the
, ;television, the record player, the
radio -hi 'fact, most parents
allow their babysitters the run of
the house, while° they are out.
Stirely • that ` kind of special
`treatrnent is worth something.

. Speaking of leaderhip; I was
simply thrilled by the women I
met'. last week 'at Hoimesaille,
leaders of the 4-H program in
Goderich Township These truly
are remarkable women who
desserye the applause of all
parents of girls who are taking
part .in the 4-H homemaking
program.
I suppose . these ladies are do
different from women all over
Ontario who are involved in the
4-1-3 Homemaking program. It
was just because I was there and
saw for myself the effort that
goes into something like this.
I didn't get talking to these
particular leaders at Holmesville
but- I have, been advised by other
4-H leaders that the cooking
clubs can , get mighty eve
for the leaders. In many
instances, I understand, • the'
leaders provide the ingredients.
for the cooking, courses which
the girls take...and that can play
havoc with a housewife's budget,
believe me. • • -
The course just completed by
the 4-H girls was.- on fruit. I
suppose this could be considered
,one of *the -mare economical
courses (although fresh friiit can
be expensive .in the Winter
monthsl. '
I was fascinated too,- by the
knowledge and skill these leaders
at Holmes -vile brought with
them to the rrieeting. It almiast
made me wish that I was young
enough to be a member of 4 -H. -
It was the cheese trays that I
found particularly attractive. I'm
very fond of cheese and crackers
to begin with and these ladies
. seemed to have every imaginable
brand of cheese and cracker on
hand for eating.
was a troupe of professional
dancers, they would certainly be
able to ' adapt, to their
surroundings '
She learned there, was "no
way" the dancers would
perform.
Mrs; Edward and some other
members of the executive also
went to the motel where the •
dancers were staying to try to
convince them to change their
minds.
° "It was just no use," Mrs.
Edward told me. "It was like a
riightniare. We felt humiliated."'
She added that many
professional performers are very
temperreentaL She felt this was
understandable in most
instances, but she also ' was
concerned - for , community ,.
concert goers in Goderich who,
bec aL of a the lateness of the
--hour. .at which the concert was
cancelled, would be -travelling
• miles to see the performance.
I understand there ' will be a
replacement concert in town
Saturday evening. It will be
Addis and Crofut, folksingers
who have, pleased Goderich
audiences before. With them this
.time will be Chris Brubeck, son
of Dave, l3rubeck the '`Iiii osis jazz
pianist.
It' sounds good. In fact, it
appeals more to me than the
dance troupe did although that
may sound like sour ° grapes.
