• )You have probably heard a
great deal about ground covers
'and -perhaps by dhanlce are • not
quite sure, as to what is meant by
the term. ` Broadly speaking,a
ground cover is any, plant used in
-large - numbers to. cover the
g=round — grass is the most
serviceable and practical of all_of
▪ them.
Nowadays• 'the term relates
more to plants that will provide
as beautiful outline- or garden
contour, that lend texture, color
contrast or • interest to an
- otherwise diffieult-t-maintain
area. From a practical point 'of
view . they . " provide easy
maintenance, less watering,
weeding, cultivation and clipping
than, -grass. In most cases .. a
tidying -up in the fall is all that is
necessary:
There are very many neat
F -low-growing plants that -may be
used as ground covers, , For
practical and aesthetica) reasons
a good ground cover must be
easy to grow in the area selected,
require minimum - maintenance,
present' a. ;-neat and attractive`
appearance. and ' enhance the
beauty -of -its' surroundings by
leaf texture and color.
The h vo best known ground
covers .are the shade -loving
periwinkle (Vinca minor) and '
the , Japanese spurge
'(Pachysandra terminalis). Both
nave excellent foliage texture of
evergreen quality but the
periwinkle grows much faster
and spreads more' rapidly. The

plant. • its leathery evergreen •
leaves are attractive all year

food for the. birds. Cuttings of
this plant, taken in August rand
placed in flats of sand under a
polyethylene tent will root_ in,
three weeks - and may -be planted
out in the fall or left, in the flats
until the following spring. -
Where the sun beats down in -

Perhaps you have a very- wet,
poorly -drained area in the corner
of your garden that could be
improved by drainage and- soil
components, , but is not ready
yet for -this expensive' and
arduous undertaking. Here. again
• the choice of the right ground
cover will at least beautify the
garden until you are ready to
start improving the soil.

most soils -on- the acid side is -the'
