Repentance and .remission
•
"Except ye repent, ye shall. •
all likewise perish" Luke 13:3
"Behold ,the Lamb of God
•
who taketh away the sin of the
world" John 1:29 •
• We live in an age when people
love to gloss over sin; . but the
inspired' Word of God makes it •
' very clear that man must.
numb y adnllt,, his guilty
condition; turn to the Lord
Jesus Christ. for forgiveness; and
receive new life 'as a gift of His
grace. -'Repentance is therefore
an indispensable and universal
need.
Dr. William Evans, when still
a student at the Moody Bible
Institute,•began talking to a man
at the Pacific Garden Mission
about his soul. The man argued,
"I don't believe the Bible, I'rn an
athiest." Evans, knowing the
Word of God never returns void,
insisted on repeating one verse
over and over to him: "Except
ye repent, ye shall all likewise
perish." The un1 eliever scoffed,
"I told you` I don't believe' the
Bible." But undaunted Evans-.
quoted Luke 13:3. The ati lest
became exasperated and
shouted, "You disgusting fellow,
what's the use in telling me that
again and again? •In anger he
struck the young -man; between
the eyes with his fist,' but God
gave the student • grace to hold
his temper. Getting up from the
• street, be retrieved his Bible and
said, P"EXCEPT AYE- REPENT,
µ yE SHALL ALL Ll ISE
PERISH." The - walked
away in a rage. The next night,
however, the ethiest was at the
Pacific Garden Mission long
before the . meeting was
scheduled to open. He confessed'
to, the superintendent, "I was
nbt able to sleep last night; all
over the walls in my room I
seemed to read; `Except ye
"repent, ye shall all likewise
perish.' When I got up the same
words were ringing in shy ears at
the breakfast_ • table, and all
through the day -they have
troubled me, I have come back
tonight to settle it all with'the-
Lord." s
Repent and turn! Now• is the
hour, -. {:
.The time of God's redeeming'
, power;
Tomorrow it may be too late
To ' enter blest salvation gate!
The Scriptures clearly state
that without the shedding of
blood there' is no remission for
sin (Hebrews 9:22). - , '
As we study. the Old,
tht Ab1
recognized this truth for • he
sacrificed ,a • lamb...-. typical of
Testament, we see a e
the coming Messiah -• to. atone
for himself alone. In similar •
fashion, Noah looked at a .lamb
upon an...aleant mythology
here) for
entire family.. The
• his n r ,Y
captive people of God' in• Egypt
took a lamb ` :for a household.
Later. -in-the-wilderness-Israel
sacrificed one lamb for the
salvation of the whole Nation. In
the New Testament, John the
Baptist bring our "spiritual
attention to focus upon the true
Lamb of fulfillment -.the Lord
Jesus Christ - for ' by His
sacrifice.. and atoning merits, He
takes away "the sin of :the
world:" Still today, all Who' ook
to Him in faith finds salvation
and cleansing.
It is said 'that the shortest
sermon the great preacher
Charles Haddon Spurgeon evdt'
preached- consisted A of -the
recitation of those blessed words
in John 1;29. He had been
commissioned to conduct special
services in the Crystal" Palace in
London, where it was arranged
that he should- use the Surrey
Gardens pulpit. t day or two
before he was to preach, he
decided ,to test the acoustical
properties 'of the building.
Thinking the auditorium empty,
he spoke in a loud voice,
"Behold the Lamb of God, who
taketh- away the sin of .the'
world!" A workman in one. of,
