LET'S -GET INVOLVED
This evening (March 3) I
attended a meeting of the
Goderich . 'Minor ' Hockey
Assobiation that was called for
the purpose of electing officers
for ' the 1970-71 season. The
meeting was well publicized in
both -the Iocal paper and on the
area radio station. I attended the
meeting as an interested citizen__
and was asked to chair the
nominations. , The -tae of:
attendance, in conjunction ,with''
a technical problem, prd'vented
those elections from taki-ng
place. AS kresult of my disgust
with the interest shown in the
meeting, 1 wish to submit the
following thoughts to your
readers:
My remarks are directed to'
parents - specifically-- to ' the
parents of children in Minor
Hockey. The 'rrressage is
probably. one not aimed at those
who will 'read this letter but
rather is one that your readers
might 'carry to those' characters
of whom I speak.
It seems that a very pressing'
problem is confronting the
Goderich Minor Hockey
Association. The problem is
certainly . not dwindling
membership more : gids are
playing „hockey 9-- hilt rather
dwindling activity and
participation on behalf of the
adglt members.
' The avoid -it -all attitude of
those people is -reaching critical
proportions. ' It Is only too
• evident that the only persons in
attendance at this rather crucial
meeting were the old executive,
several coaches and Managers,
and a very few 'ambitious
parents. This stalwart few was
highly representative of THE
group that has.-rried . on the
program for, providing minor
hockey for severa1Nb'rndred kids
while the vast majo'ity. of
Barents haven't had the interest

are getting free services, but they
sure as heck aren't giving in
return.
I don't know what has
happened to their sense of
obli tion. Surely at some time
in Their' earlier youth, they
reaped , the benefits of having
° responsible and ambitious find
unselfish volunteer leaders who
guided them through organised
activities such as minor sports?'
I know there are those who
say: that kids_ today have never
had it'so good - but - does this
mean these parents are too blind
and -too selfish to see that their
own kids and countless Others
will lose . out on the benefits of
organized activities that a few
• tireless men and women have
seen fit . to provide? The
"tireless" men and women are
getting tired; and who can blame
them.!

The time has come to start
getting rough. We dertainly can't
pound the idea of. ``action',into..__
their heads, but -we- can• do
something else. Put these
parasitic laggards on the spot.
Don't sit and be politely passive
when they complain that they
are too busy and haven't got the
time; don't let them get away
with flagrant cfiticism of the few
that do get involved. Show them
exactly where they stand. ,
