Mrs. 'label, presided for thii annual Meeting and conveners'.; and secretaries •gave their reports. The •secretary reported ten 'tregnlar _ and _ two. •: executive, meetings had been held during the past year.• A -25-year pin was presented to Mrs, F. Walkoin. Honorary membershcps ere presented to Mrs. C. K. _aunders and Mrs. C. A. Reid. Two rurnmege sales had been held during the year and the Chapter also sponsored a dessert „ 'bridge, five hundred and bake ` sale. -During the year the Chapter , . was privileged to hear a number of guest speakers, and other items of interest to . I.O.D.E. • An award for 44 years of faithful service to the childreni&-•Aid Society -was presented last Wednesday.evening to Mrs. Albert Taylor (right) at the annual CAS banquet held this year in Knox Presbyterian Church. Paget, executive director of the Children's Aid and Socie* for the Prevention -of -Cruelty to Children, Erie County, Buffalo, New York, was . the • speaker last Wednesday • evening at the annual banquet of • uron-County---Childien1/2-- • Aid Society held in Knox Presbyterian Chinch. Mr. Paget said the "little old — family is the, punching bag" for all the changes in society, churches, industry .and politics. All.'of these, changes "affect the family first" said Mr. Paget. He told the meeting it tikes "a massive amount .of money and a massive amount of staff" t� hold families together. Mr. Paget stressed the need to keep • families together "at all costs." ."Too often, I believe; people expect social wdrkers in a sic month period. to perform their Miracles," Mr. Paget noted, "and it justyon't Ile spoke Of a child in foster •as a child "in limbo" and . • outlined the • 24-hdur service known as . Emergency Parents • which is now operating' in New York State. "Children in crisis. • need • a • social worker right at the moment of crisis rather than, • picking up the -pieces later," Mr. ,. Paget continued. He said Emergency Parents goes into operation the moment • it is learned that children have been left alone in the home, whatever the reason. Whoever., • goes intoftlie home makes every attempt to locate the parents :and then Stays with the children until the parents do arrive back. "We take the risk of being sued," he told his audience, "but I believe if I have the right to remove a Child from his legal home, then surely I have the right to keep a, child in -his own home." ' _-_Paget carted' the • single -parent family- a "most fragile. type of family" and he' urged urged all ,organizations in the community to recognize that Tact. I "Single -parent families, are not . welcomed," Mr. Paget , complained. "Let's face it. Does the church reaLly want single -parent families in their congregations?" • He stressed the importance of a homemaker service and noted that in the USA there are about ,6000 to' 7,000 homemakers across the countryas opposed to about 50,000 homemakers in . 7 He referred to foster parents as treatment teards dealing with emotionally disturbed childien.'? Mr..Paget.said the man is a very important part ,of the foster parent plan, and suggested that foster parents:should be paid for their efforts. ° "We pay them $100 a month after three years," Mr. Paget reported, "because they are • staff. It • costs • money- to rehabilitate children - in: foster care." . - - Mr. Paget was introduced by •Rev: .R. ft C. McLenaghan, Dungannon, and thanked 1343, Mrs. Merv'Cudrnore, Exeter. Marys ,schools. calendars were placed • ,in the schools in to'iri TFwg-- trophies . for literature were presented to Grade VIII pilphs " Victor- Lauriston .arid St. Marys schOols. A bursary was given •to stutait at. the.Regional Scho01 f(Iiirsing in Stratford, ' • Two new Members joined the Chapter during the year. - Seven crib quilts were forwarded to the War Memorial Chiidretes Hospital. in_Londom_ Hospital gowns, baby clothes, mitts and other articles of clothing were forwarded to 1.0,1/E. headquarters. Flowers. were sent to the sick; and on other occasions* during the year by the convener of this department. Contributions to the various departments of 1.0.D.E. work were serit in during the year.
