Our minister is an erplwrassment to the congregation. He is a very fine person, and . extremely• conscientious but he always looks sb l tacky. His clothes appear' to .be worn, his shoes look rundown, and his shirt cuffs are' frayed. "His winter coat looks. like something he picked up in a rummage sale.'Please don't think I atn bein 4cafty,- but his wife also looks 'Shabby. No one expects 'a 'minister's wife to be a fashion plate but this woman is . wearing dresses and hats that are at least eight years old. No one wants to tell the minister and his .wife to shape `'up. They are compassionate, lovable people and his sermons are the best, but we feel that since -they do represent us in the , community they should not go • around looking like charity, cases. Any. suggestions on. how to _ get the message across? — MEMBER OF THE COMMITTEE' DEAR MEMBER: You failed to give the most important "detail." How much do you pay. your lovable, compassionate, conscientious minister? - Are you aware that half of the Protestarft . ministers in this country earn less•than $8,000 a year? A chemist with comparable education earns approximately 50 percent more Plumbers, . electricians, 'and bricklayers often make twice as much°'as the man th ,y listen to in the pulpit on Sunday. This . situation is a national disgrace and I hope you will -go backand tell your fellow committee' members that the reason the minister's coat looks 'like -he picked • it,,„ up " at a rummage sale is ---because he probably did. DEAR ANN • LANDERS: - 'Mew- elaborate'en your advice regarding the 10 -year-old girl rand her .19 -year-old brother. You said . three ' •behavioral specialists agreed they should be separated because of the likelihood of a 'perManent incestuous relationship — emotional or physical, in' ,both, I have never heard of einotional incest.' Would like to know, more about it because of some . odd and peculiar relationships jn our own family. This cou,ldq\be ;tile "explanation. •Thank you. — N,0 IDENTIFICATION' PLEASE DEAR NO D.; The letter to which • you • rel;er described a brother,sister---.relationship ` that was much too clo"S9 f pr n ctxt: The little .girl was constantly on her 'brother's lap, -kissing" and caressing „4, him. ' Whenever he. brought a, date to the 'house, Little Sister became ugly and sullen. She viewed every other female as a predator. Her rrassmenf p'bssessivene$s was appalling, lie, in turn, fondled her, called her bis"NCutie Pie and e"ncouraged her toluss over him. -My consultants agreed that .the pawing, patting and pseudo love making described in the letter was unhealthy and that the boy should live elsewhere, if -Visible. They agreed, also that incest between brother and sister need not be physical. It can be emotional: Even though --there Is - no sexual activity, the two can be in love with one another to the extent that neither' can relate normally' to a member of. the opposite sex. To the boy, his sister remains throughout his life his Number One •3h1, And to her, - brother is considered forever the most important man in the world. ®AD bor314-1- KNOW YET ---BUT JUNIOR }i AS SOME DO IT YOUR- SELF IDEAS OF HIS OWN fl Por ur -Toops AWAY OF C C -t1 / 1-1REN .. The reason for Kim's deci- sion is rather fuzzy in our eyes, as she wasn't failing, and even seemed to like some aspects of it. „But I think the main reason was that, after 13 years of school and piano lessons, she. had simply' had enough, and wanted to find out what real life is all about. I haven't figures (but I'll bet . they're shocking) of the num- ber of bright young people who quit college in their ,first year. The reasons are obvious. It is boring,. it doesn't live up to their expectations, or they can't stand the new freedom and -fall behind, hopelessly, in their work. is that they want to `find" themselves, to learn to I.tvc' 4t • a world. . that,. is- not cattail- ' wrapped. :,gr institutionalized. There are tears and exhorta "tions and 'beating of breasts. There is the rational approach, the 'plative approach,. -the thunderous condemnation. But you .might as well try to reason with John Calvin or. •an oak :stump as• with a stubborn 18 -year-old who has made up . his -or her mind about some-. thing. The, favorite expression• - their grey -faced parents en,- gaged:- They , are ,.simply sick of . a system with a stick at c)ne end and a carrot, •in the form of a pleb or paper, at the other. For some kids, the system is fine. And.i especially admire those who, without too much natural ability, and practically no money, haul themselves through school by their boot- straps, on plain hard work; For others, a minority, the system is rotten, arid to some extent I agree with them. They want a simpler, cleaner way of • life. It's . a tough decision for them. Often, it takes more courage toquit than to con- form. They hay to hurt their baffled parents. They are ' la- belled as lazy punks and drop- outs. They are told they can't face reality. They are Confront- " ed. by nagging, ' , bullying, threats and bribes, along with their own feelings of guilt. i RRK .. president re-elected They often become emotionally disturbed, or pretty .tough on the Surface. '$ut ,there's one tiling par- • ents must do. They must stop trying -to litre through :.them• kids, especially when the latter are old enough to, work, to marry and to. live 'their." own ' lives. Parents should dols the same -- ' hive their 'wtl lives. They should" go on loving their offspring, ifpossible. They should help them, if they need help. But they should stop trying to manipulate them, to mold them into a design they think is the right one. Please don't 'think I'm de. fending- all ---dropouts.
