Two men , involved in the United ,Appeal sof the city of London were on 'hand in the of xoom at • the Bedford xl otel to provide information lox , e pns '. interested in such a seam. Bill Bennett and Joe Dolan urged those present to consider the gathering as an -"informal; ' ;down to. earth, kick -around• sort of meeting." If there is a point of contention about the , matter, it is simply concern that not all agencies presently conducting annual door-to-door fund raising campaigns in Goderich would be embraced within a united fund drive because individual agencies may be reluctant to join the United Fund movement until it had •proven its worth. A notable exception .discussed at the meeting is the Cancer Society campaign- for funds. It was pointed out that .because cancer is such a ' "dramatic disease" it can command tremendous financial support from the :.people. In most cases it has been discovered that a united fund drive cannot raise sufficient money, to satisfy the Cancer Society objectives. Usually the Cancer Society can raise More money by conducting its own .campaign. Dr. Frank Mills, chairman of the meeting, explained that in some- communities the Cancer Society is -a part -of. the United o rga nation ' and. make` ' a minimum of work.for the canvassers: An alt out effort once a year in the town,t was also, stated, is a real community spirit booster as well. K When a United Fund drive is organized, 'it, is possible to institute a plan ;by which deductions are made directly from the paycheck of agreeable persons working where such a plan is in effect. "It is the easyy 1ainless wadi ° o " give,,' remarked Bill Bennett. Joe Dolan referredLo',it as. the • "secret of success." ' The Rotary Club is planning another meeting in about six weeks to discuss the •matter_ further. Taylor's Corner Community Club holds Fund drive. It requires careful 'groundwork and ari , extensive education ° program . in, the community, _but it is conceivable' that all agencies who . depend upon solicited funds could be represented in a United Fund drive.
