Safety .Council
Corner—
The Goderich. Community
aa'ety Council held its regular
• meeting Tuesday evening at the
Community Room of -Victoria
and Gfey Trust Company.
• Three members have been
invited to attend the annual
meeting of the Sarnia Safety,
Council•and it was decided Ron
. Wilton, vice chairman; Maurice
__-Wilkinson, chairman of .'the
° investigative committee and Gus
Balkouras, treasurer, should
"attend. The chairman is unable
to be away from town due ;to
business but will send a resume
of work and projected plans
with the delegation:
The ;council voiced some
'displeasure at the decision•ot the
`town's public works department
.t take no -action on preventing
children using the playgrouihd of
the old Victor Lauriston School
-for a toboggan run. Reeve 'Harry'
_,Wsell-told council he had been
to the site and could see no
problem so no action _ would .be
taken.
The safety coui:,:il made the
request of council after• a child
slid into the road in :frontof a
car : after " s'_'.ding from the
playground on a toboggan.
Ari •:,extremely dangerous
situation exists at the
intersection of Victoria Street
and Elgin Avenue involving the
traffic lights. The safety council
•will send a report' to council"
containing the findings of the
safety council's study of the
situation ' over' the past two
months with. recommended
- changes ins the phasing of the
lights._
A donation of 550 has been
received from the: Goderich
_ Rotary. Club and will be
gratefully acknowledged, The
club has shown itself to have a
genuine . condern for the people
of Goderich.
The next meeting will be held
at 7:30 p.m. , on Tuesday,
„February 2; at Victoria • and
GreyThe public L cordially
invited to attend.
Particular areas to watch in
the town, and especially when
driving; are near schools aed
intersections used by children on
their way to and from school.
The salt trucks' don't get
around the school areas .too
much and when the weather gets
as `cold as it has been this week
the road surface becomes glazed
and very dangerous. Children
love a slippery surface and the
"road is an inviting place to skate.
•It would be almost impossible
for the Goderich Police
Department to stop the children
from using the streets for sliding'n
so it must be up to the motorist
to watch. for them and above all
t o • understand that when
children play they;,invariably do
not listen fp_ nyti} Bg ter than
. what is di1etl af%ding. them
at that moment. They will not
hear the toot df a car horn until
the car is on top of them, and
the. -practice of motorists who
toot , the horn, expect the
children to clear the road and
keep driving at the same speed as
they were is a highly dangerous
one.
Give a little when dealing'
with children. Youth should be, a
carefree time of life and we
should try to make it as carefree
for the young as we can.
Restrictions will not solve much;
although the• children should be
;warned of the dangers of playing
on the roads, so just watch for
them to do the unexpected.
They will live longer then.
