Wrong, says Fire Chief Ted Bisset. Unless special care is taken in the choice of a. Christmas tree, he warns, a happy holiday can turn in a flash through a ®blaze into terrible tragedy. The Chief urges the public to follow these rules when shopping for a natural tree: First be sure the tree is green and fresh. To check this, test twigs and needles to ensure they are hot dried out. Keep, the tree outdoors or in an unheated garage until it is time to set it up indoors. Then, cut one or two inches diagonally from the butt with a saw, and set up the tree in a stand which allows for immersion of the butt in water. Maintain the water level to cover the butt. Set up the tree away from any source of heat such as a fireplace, radiator, stove or TV set. Do not allow it to block access tb any door or window•, Never smoke near the tree, nor allow matches or candles nearby. Check strings 9f electric lights for frayed cords or damaged insulation which might cause short circuits. Only lighting sets bearing the Canadian Standards Association label should be bought, and only non-flammable decorations. "Flameproofing" of natural trees with chemical mixtures is not a safe substitute for immersion of the butt in water, and is not recommended. Candles should never be used as tree decorations, never anywhere in holders made from styrene foam, and preferably never at all. Though the safest tree is a fresh green one, with the butt immersed in water, if a tree is dried out before it is set up in water, it cannot regain a safe moisture level. Even ai tifiFial tees present their own hazards Metallic trees, due to the danger of short circuits, should never be illuminated by strings of electric lights. Floodlights should be used, remote from the tree. Plastic trees are all made of combustible materials, and the safest one is therefore one which would burn slowly. Gift wrappings should never be left to accumulate near the tree on Christmas morning, or whenever gifts are opened. Even a moist tree will burn' if exposed to a ring of burning paper around the base. A dryer•, tree will burn furiously to a blackened stem in a few seconds, igniting a l'I combustible furnishings nearby. Think about these things, says Fire Chief Ted Bisset, and especially remember 'to keep an eye. on little children at this time of year. Never leave them alone for an instant, no matter how strong the temptation to pay a short visit CO a neighbor, or make a last-minute purchase. Drowning fatalities high on list of snowmobile accidents Reports on snowmobile accidents and fatalities are already reaching the Ontario Safety League „ offices:, Characteristic fatality was the drowning., of a snowmobiler when his rnachi. r' broke through the ice (;r1a freshly frozen lake. Up to 1 1-„te years ago, drowning w the chief cause of snowm "ing fatalities in Ontario. Fre): ip and break-up are the two et, ,al times, and the ability of the snowmobile to travel far -and fast makes it particularly vulnerable • as ice may be adequately strong in one sectionof a lake but dangerously thin within a mile or two. Water currents which can occur unpredictably create the greatest hazard for ice travel as they wear away the under surface of ice, seldom giving any indication until it is too late for the unfortunate victim. Six inches of ice is minimum for snowmobiling and then caution. _ The second fatality which carne to the attention of the ally, the first Ontario Safety League was the result of a snowmobile colliding with a motor vehicle on a public thoroughfare. This is the type of accident which accounted for the deaths of over twenty snowmobilers during the past season in Ontario. ,The • l..eague greatly fears this may be a portent of tragedy to come in th'e ensuing season if snowmobile operators do not use their privileges to travel on Ontario highways with greater care and common sense. Snowmobiles are well designed to be handled safely on snow -Covered surfaces where the guiding skis and traction belt can grip into a sufficient'depth of snow. Put this same machine on icy or hard packed snow surfaces of roadways and it becomes use 4 to 1 uncontrollable at a en moderate speeds. • - Snowmobiling is a wonderful sport, but let's use some common sense and keep the tragedy out of it..
