We received a note from a Toronto reader . recently criticising the proofreader at the Signal -Star for a headline that referred to cactus in the plural as cactuses. The note, typed over the top of a part of one page of the Signal -Star, stated "Please note the plural form of `Cactus' is CACTI ....not cactuses." In reply to our Toronto reader, we would suggest he, or she, (the note was not signed), check a good dictionary — or even a not so good one for that matter. It will be seen that the plural fotm of cactus may be either cactuses OR cacti, with preference given to cactuses.
