Prince Albert, husband of
Queen Victoria, is credited with
introducing the Christmas tree
to England at the time Charles..
Dickens wrote his classic story
"A Christmas Carol."
Since then it has become
more popular year after year,
with decorations becoming more
A blaze of light not just a blaze
elaborate and more colorful; but
electric lighting, while colorful,
can pose - serious hazards —
particularly fire. _ ..
Follow this advice for a happy
and a safe Christmas.
Look for the CSA
certification mark when you buy
your Christmas lights. It mean
approval by the Canadian
Standards Association.
The ideal Christmas tree light
set of the conventional kind
should have these
characteristics: it should be light
in weight; sockets should be
strong enough not to break or
crack if stepped on; they should
have means for secure fastening
to the tree branches (usually a
metal or plastic clip). To reduce
tangling and to improve
Decorate with candles
for special effectiveness
Remember the old white
candle — mainstay of the family
in emergencies and a one-time
symbol of gracious dining.
Well, it's almost a museum
piece now — brushed aside by an
avalanche of color and candle
design that caters to more
modern taste. The new designs
are in high fashion textures,
more decorative than ever
before.
Dinner tapers in various
1 e n gths and shaped in
conventional forms, spirals, the
new square tapers and Danish
tapers are "in." What gives them
an added touch is the color
range ,— from h6t pink, lemon,
cinnamon, violet, mint green,
gold and silver and many other
shades which add sparkle and
bounce to china, crystal and
flatware.
There are many interesting
facts about candles: for instance,
some are for burning and some
are not for burning. The
differences are quite often too
subtle to be noticed, such as the
• quality of the waxes, the color
stability and length of burning
time. Some of the .differences
such as the unique texture and
decorative features are readily
apparent to the. eye.
Production of candles is a skill
process. A candle with a 7/8
inch base, diameter • requires'
hand dipping and cooling 24
times. And, of course, the color
fidelity of each candle is most
important in the production
process.
Many housewives become
annoyed when their candles
drip; here are some of the
reasons: holder too near the
ceiling; holder not manufactured
properly; candle too close to a
mirror; holder in a direct draft;
too many people at the party;
tampering with the candle, or
perhaps a bug took his life in
your candle flame.
Candles should never be
blown out because in doing so°
you run the risk that the wax
will spill over and the candle will
smoke. A snuffer should be used
wherever possible. Candles
should never to burned directly..
on a table or cloth. The
undersurface should be
protected by using a clean sheet
of film wrap, a mirrored base or
a cardboard base under the
candle; or burry it -on a _ tray or
plate.
Here are some helpful
suggestions for floating candle'
displays:
1)' Submerge a flower in
water, hold to the bottom with a
little florist's clay, then burn a
floating candle 2) For a shower
appearance parallel -wired sets
should have their cords enclosed
in a single covering. .
Check lights and o wiring
thoroughly before hanging them.
Discard defective lights, and any
wiring that is frayed or bare. Be
sure the fuse on the electrical
current you use is not over 15
amperes.
Carefully follow all
instructions firoyided by
manufacturers. The safety
features built into equipment
can be 'nullified by carelessor
improper installations and use.,
Do not use electrical
equipment on metal trees. A
power leak could burn or kill
anyone who touches the tree.
Use off -tree flood or spotlighting
instead.
When setting up a natural
everygreen tree, saw off the
' trunk diagonally at least one
inch above the original cut; place
the base of the tree in a deep
pan of water for the entire
period of time it it indoors, and
be sure to add water each day to
keep the water level above the
cut.
Support the tree in -a solid
stand so it will not accidentally
fall over.
luncheon, tint the water green or
use lemon lime soda before you
float the burning candle. 3) For
a wedding setting, submerge
bride and groom figurines in the
water first.
Decorative candles are now
big business• and getting bigger.
They serve as a . mood setter for
almost any occasion.
In an imaginative gold holder,
a chunky olive green and gold
candle adds a finishing touch to
a room decorated in autumn
colors. -Dainty pastel candles
soften bedroom decor and votive
candles in colored glass
containers reflect and glow
beautifully to give warmth and
sparkle . to the whole • room.
There's an exotic touch in a hint
of incense from perfumed
candles.
Christmas trees should not be
placed near grounding surfaces
such as water pipes, or
heat -radiating devices such as
radiators and heaters.
Choose flameproof or fire
retardant decorations.
Plan for a fire emergency.
Have alternative escape routes
out of the room. Do not place a
tree near an exit.
If you" do have a natural
evergreen, remove it as soon as it
shows signs of drying out. Dried
out trees are like tinder.
Not To Be Taken Lightly
* Don't let bulbs touch the
tree.
* "bon't leave the lights on
when you go out of the room.
* Don't overload the wall
plug or extension cord.
* Don't use metal icicles near
lighting sets.
* Don't put the Christmas.
tree near a fireplace or a TV set.
* Don't let small children
play near the tree unsupervised,
and keep matches, lighters and
candles out of their reach:
* Be careful with cigarettes.
Trees and Christmas wrappings
are a fire hazard.
* Don't allow piles of
Christmas wrappings to
accumulate in the house; and
don't burn°them in the fireplace.
* Don't combine polystyrene
(a glossy, plastic -like, molded
material) candle holders with
wax candles in any decoration.
* Don't block exits . from the
house.
Illuminating Your House
* For outdoor decorations,
buy decorative lights and
equipment which have been
tested and approved by- the
Canadian Standard Association
and identified by the CSA label
for outdoor use. Outdoor lights
have weatherproof sockets and
heavier wiring than required
indoors.
* For outdoor lighting,
parallel -wired strings with an
intermediate base are best. These
are the largest of the decorative
bulbs; each one consumes about
10 watts.
• * When an outdoor bulb
burns out, be sure to use the
rubber washer when replacing it.
These' make the sockets
waterproof.
* Carefully , follow all
instructions issued by
manufacturers for lighting
equipment.
* If planning extensive
lighting for your home, have a
competent electrician do the
work.
* If yOu connect strings of
lights with add-on connectors,
be sure you have no more than
60 10 -watt bulbs in the total
string. •
* Don't leave outdoor
lighting equipment up when the
holiday season is over. -It will
deteriorate if left on the house.
