'kings open basketball
season with wins
BY; R.R.
The Goderich . Collegiate
basketball teams are off to an
auspicious start this season. In
six exhibition games played, the
GPCI teams have a perfect
tecorti of six victories.
The Junior boys' team, under
coach Pete tammaert, defeated
Wingham 38-30 in a game in
Wingharn last week and then
beat Parkhill 32-24 here on
Friday.
Against Wingham, point
getters were John Pamminger
and Doug Fisher with nine
apiece; Charley Turland, Steve
Stringer and Brian Scully each
with six points; and Rob Jerry
with two. Brian Scully led the
way against Parkhill with 10
points; followed by Doug Fisher
with eight; John Pamminger,
Steve Stringer and Dave
Patterson with four each; and
Gary Fisher with two.
The. Junior squad showed
good defensive rebounding in
both games, and offensively,used
the fast breaks to good
advantage. Their defensive press
worked well, especially against
Parkhill, where it was probably
the chief factor in the Vikings'
victory. The Vikings' shooting
was less thap impressive, but will
improve with work.
Ooach • Frank McDonald's
Senior squad defeated Wingham
47-32, and edged Parkhill 31-29.
Warren -watt hooped 17
,points .against Wingham while
Jon Ginn hit far 14. Stu Asher
with six, Brian MacKenzie and
— Brock Stimson with four each
and Gary Lounsbury with two
points rounded out the scoring.
Top point getters for Wingham
were Shinn, Smith and Pritchard
with six apiece.
The win over Parkhill was a
thriller that saw the Vikings
down eight points with three
minutes to go. Gary Lounsbury
stole the ball repeatedly from
the opposition to set up the
Goderich come back that saw
– Brock Stimson hoop the winning
• basket with 20 seconds to go.
Top scorer was Jon Ginn with
eight points. Warren Watt added
six,. Stimson five, -Brian
MacKenzie and Dave Carruthers
four each, while Stu Asher and
Gary Lounsbury both had two
points.
The -Senior team has four
returnees from last year, with six
•graduates from the Junior squad
rounding out the roster.
Not to be outdone by their
male counterparts, the Goderich
Collegiate girls' teams both
scored victories over Wingttam.
•
he Senior girls won 10--
9 in a
low scoring game, while the
Juniors came put on the long
end of a 1644 squeeker.
For the Seniors, Peggy
Stoddart got five points, Gail
Fisher and Clara Bedard two
each, while Jennifer Cook added
one. °
kr.
Susan Duckworth led the
Junior team with nine points,
