McCleave Christmas with Many fascinating legends and folklore surrounding early holiday rituals that preceded the Christmas -celebrations sis we know them today can befound in the new Christmas books at the library. The origins of our present day customs are uncovered. Some of the books include unique decorations and cOmplete holiday menus, old and new. Also, there are brand new Christmas stories for the young readers. The following books can be obtained through the Goderich Library. A BOOK OF CHRISTMAS by William Sansom (New York, McGraw-Hill, 1968; 256 pages) The Christian Christmas that we celebrate today was not recognized by the Church of Rome until the middle of the fourth century. Yet there is evidence of an annual mid -winter festival as far back as the Stone -Age. William Sansom, a distinguished novelist and short -story writer from St. John's Wood, London, takes the reader on a dramatic tour through the centuries of Christmas observances, both pagan and Christian. He explores all the weird customs and strange ceremonies surrounding the festival of winter from the beginning of the prehistoric rites to all parts of- the ancient and new world — including North America. He introduces you to the Vikings' Up -Helly -Aa ceremony, still practiced t9day in the Shetland Islands of Britain. He seats you at a holiday feast of 120 dishes'where you will share a boar's head with Henry II. He shows you the first Christmas tree and the original greeting card, and tells of the Superstitions of Abe mysterious Mistletoe branch. YOu will learn the significance of the twelve days of Christmas and the Partridge in a Pear Tree. This is an exciting encyclopedia Of all the aspects of Christmas and the reader will find many interesting surprises on every page. A MERRY CHRISTMAS HERBAL by Adelma Grenier Simmons (New York, W. Morrow, 1968; 159 pages) Herb enthusiasts will enjoy this imaginative approach to cooking and decorating with herbs. Adelma Simmons, popular lecturer and designer of auentic herb gardens, is one of the foremost authorities on the subject. There are forty-four unusual holiday recipes, such as, a difference Julglogg,,..a highly spiced wine served from the Olde English Wassail bowl., Included is a complete indelt on herbs and spices with information on planting, care and use of each item. Other special features are a living -herb tree, the manger herbs, and an indoor herb garden. CHRISTMAS TREASURES by Editors of Hallmark (Doubleday, 1966; 80 pages) Readers of all ages will enjoy 'this delightful book filled with all the best of Christmas. Art displays are by Norman Rockwell, Currier and Ives, and Santa's first official portrait artist, Thomas Nast. There is a Christmas note from Queen Victoria, a story by 0. Henry, and an article entitled Christmas Hash from Odgen Nash. Also, Longfellow.'s Christmas Bells, and Pierpont's Jingle Bells. And, of courses no Christmas collection would be complete without .The Night Before Christmas, and Dickens' Christmas C, arol. BEFANA'S GIFT by Natalie Savage Carlson (New York, Harper & Row, 1969; 86 pages) Cesare is a carriage driver in Rome. One day he picked up an old, woman with a crooked nose.
