The Christian Christmas that
we celebrate today was not
recognized by the Church of
Rome until the middle of the
fourth century. Yet there is
evidence of an annual
mid -winter festival as far back as
the Stone -Age.
William Sansom, a
distinguished novelist and
short -story writer from St.
John's Wood, London, takes the
reader on a dramatic tour
through the centuries of
Christmas observances, both
pagan and Christian. He explores
all the weird customs and
strange ceremonies surrounding
the festival of winter from the
beginning of the prehistoric rites
to all parts of- the ancient and
new world — including North
America.
He introduces you to the
Vikings' Up -Helly -Aa ceremony,
still practiced t9day in the
Shetland Islands of Britain. He
seats you at a holiday feast of
120 dishes'where you will share
a boar's head with Henry II. He
shows you the first Christmas
tree and the original greeting
card, and tells of the
Superstitions of Abe mysterious
Mistletoe branch. YOu will learn
the significance of the twelve
days of Christmas and the
Partridge in a Pear Tree.
This is an exciting
encyclopedia Of all the aspects
of Christmas and the reader will
