How can second:stringers improve if they never get a chance to play in a real -game? The system is rotten to the core. It doesn't develop character, it promotes resentment and bitterness. It builds the egos of the kids who don't need it and it -crushes the spirit of those who do. Our 'boys are out of school now so I have no axe to grind. But it hurts me to see our neighbor's sons going through the same cruel thing. Please . deal with this All-American problem in your column, Ann. — D.A. DEAR D.A.: One of the unalterable facts of life is that all the world loves a winner. The system is unquestionably' rigged to. honor the victorious — not the good sport or the guy whose ego needs bolstering. No coach can afford to bench his super -stars when the opposition is using theirs — and winning. Of course, the system is hard on the second-best but until losing becomes as glorious as winning, I don't anticipate a change in the system. Dismiss a suspicion and replace it with trust, . In the hands of little children it can become an instrument of 'injury and even death in the home, The Council on Family Health, • a non-profit organizationestab- lished by members of the drug industry to promote family health and home safety, suggests some ways of preventing acci- dents caused by heat and flames in the home. Never leave little children alone at home, no matter what the urgency. Never leave small children alone in a room with a heater going, a burning fireplace, or lighted candles. Children are fas- cinated by flames. When you have finished iron- ing, place the hot iron where it cannot be touched by little chil- dren. 'Coil the cord nearby, out of reach of little hands. Clothes of fire resistant ma- terials help provide some protec- tion, but care should be exercised wherever heat is used in the home. Some clothing materials are so highly flammable they can burn to ashes in an instant. Other materials melt and burn into the body. Heaters should have protective covers, and be located where members of the family cannot brush against them. Fireplaces should be gCre'ened and the en- tire familr-should keep a safe distance from the hearth. Burning candles should be snuffed out before everyone leaves a room: Keep cigarette lighters and matches out of reach of young- sters. Many a parent has been surprised to discover a child under five is strong and skillful enough to flick a lighter, or strike a match. It takes only an instant for a fire to start. The presence of a' responsible adult in the home can be the best guard against children playing with fire, ad- vises the Council on , Family Health. * FRIGIDAIRE 'WESTINGHOUSE * GIBSON * HOOVER Sales and Service Mrs. Henry Bradley 82 Gloucester Terrace GERRY'S APPLIANCES The Square — Goderich Now Owned and Operated 1 by Chuck Jewell - WORK BOOTS Mrs. F. This is the sort of rationaliz- ing I was doing this week when took not one, but two days sick leave. That makes six days in ten years. I'd been coughing like a kan- garoo with consumption. Mop- ing my nose was like trying to • stop Niagara Falls with Klee- nex, I was dizzier than a bat at high noon. I ached from stem to gudgeon, and I couldn't de- cide which was aching more. It's boring, I know. But the 'flu is always boring. Except when you have it yourself. Then it's fascinating. When you have it, you .know. that nobody has ever been as ill as you. Especially those phonies on TV who stay in bed, drink plenty of fluids, and stuff themselves with aspirin. My wife is a great comfort at such times. She invariably • says, "You're going to die with that chest cold!" And then she sits back and starts counting on her fingers. The term insur- ance, the life insurance. When she begins to look a bit nasty, I realize I haven't enough insurance to keep her in affluence. That's about when she calls the doctor, so I'll get better, so I can take out more insurance. The doctor, of course, always settles everything. He says, "Hmmm. Got the 'flu, eh?" Na- turally I've got the 'flu or my wife wouldn't have called him. If I had merely a broken leg, she'd probably set it herself. But you can die with the 'flu. And the doctor says, "Take plenty of bed, stay in aspirin, and drink lots." This always All's well that - ends well brightens me up, and I pull out of the slump within a week, provided I don't drink too much. But there -'s a moral question involved with the 'flu. Should one go to church, school or business, and hack, sneeze, cough and spit all over the congregation, the classroom ot colleagues? The answer, I think, is an unequivocal "yes," provided we have the strength. That's the only way in which we can maintain one of our few great old Canadian tradition sr spreading the 'flu. We have spread two things in this coun- try since pioneer days, 'flu and fertilizer, and we mustn't, stop now. Spreading the 'flu is not without its merits, provided it is done with tact and timing. As witness. On Friday night we were supposed to go to the annual ball of the year. You know the sort of thing. Every town has one. Five percent of the, men. want , to go, and 100 percent of the women. It's a chance for them to wear their wigs, make the old man spring for a smashing new dress, and dis- cuss for the next week what ridiculous things the other women were wearing. After wheezing and sneezing for about three days, I was looking forward to it as ene might look forward to his own funeral. So sick was I that even the thought of having to shine my shoes made me feel faint. That was bad enough. But somehow we'd been finessed into having an after -the -ball party with 30 people guril!ng food and drink. 1 didn't see how I could get through it, alive. Yes, Virginia there is a San- ta Claus. To my delight and her horror my wife woke up Friday morning hacking and gasping and as feverish as I. I'd spread . her the 'flu. She hung on till afternoon hoping for a miracle recovery but then had to throw in the towel and cancel everything. That probably saved my life and about $100 so the 'flu can't be all bad. give;.. so more will live HEART FUND FOR YOUR FIRE INSURANCE SeeorPhOne MALCOLM MATHERS GENERAL INSURANCE AGENT 46.
