• Deer hunting reported very good

BY J. J. ARMSTRONG
Although the deer shunt has
been over for almost a month,
many a hunter is probably still
reliving the excitement of the
past ,hunt. Success rates were not
unusually high, but the fact that
many more deer were seen than
were shot is an indication, that
from ii pure recreational point of
view, this year's hunt was as
good as former years.
During,the three-day season in
Grey County, excluding Keppel
Township and the archery,
season data, conservation'
officers contacted 536 hunters
who reported that they had
h gaited for 799 days, saw 152
deer, shot at 90 and killed 29 for
a hunter success rate of 5.41
percent.
The hunt in Bruce County,
excluding St. Edmunds, Lindsay,
Eastnor, Albermarle and Amabel
Fire loss set at x10,000
Loss of a barn and its
contents at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Mel Dickson, Ashfield
Township, on November 27 has
now been set at $10,000.
The barn was destroyed when
fire 'broke out in the early
morning hours while Mr.
Dickson was refuellint a tractor:
Mr. Dickson told the
Signal -Star he had warmed the
tractor up in the barn yard and
after checking the fuel tank
started to refuel the machine
from a storage tank beside the
barn. An explosion occurred and
the fire started.
Mr. Dickson said he ran into
the . bard and brought out a
second, larger tractor and
managed to save that but by that
time the fire had burned through
the side of the barn and straw on
the inside was on fire.
The Ripley and Goderich Fire
Departments were summoned
but were unable to save the -barn
or its contents.
Lost were 800 bales of straw;
85 pigs including 55 chunks,
eight sows and 20 weiner pigs.
The tractor that started the fire
was also lost and the 70 foot by
25- .foot frame building was
destroyed.
Mr. .-Dickson praised the
efforts of the fire departments
who managed to save the house
which is close to'he barn and
also a new pig barn addition that
was under construction on the
west end of the barn.
Mr. and Mrs. Dickson also had
high praise for neighbors who
came to help out during the fire
and afterwards.
