Round and About
With Martha
1 think everyone has a pet
gripe that stays with you like a
hidden thorn.
Well my little thorn - (or one
"► of them) -is - "scrambled eggs,
of all things - it really upsetsme
every time I make it.
Somewhere in my life, I've
had beautiful fluffy, scrambled
eggs - and since I.don't care too
much for them in the first place
- it really, made an impression
on me.
When I was in London
Hospital I had scrambled eggs
several ,times and they were just
great. They had some color
added - which made them all
• the more palatable but r they
were thick and soft - and 4- well
- edible. I couldn't find out
how or what they did to those
eggs "Oh you just stir in a
little cream - cook them slowly
4
One day when I was about to
• do sore for luncheon I called a
friend - a wonderful cook -
about my problem -
"You may have too much
heat" and "the recipe is so
simple you shouldn't go wrong."
- I still had tough scrambled
• eggs and I'm still disgusted.
Today, my "other half" - (I
won't say "better half" - he
may get a swelled head) was in
for lunch ahead of me and the
old eggs were just a -sizzling. He
turned a mass of beautiful
• scrambled eggs over his toast and
I stood there and gritted my
teeth.
What's the matter with MY
scrambling?
In the supermarket one day, I
bought a foil package of stuff
•. 'specially for "extra good
omelets." I'll try it!

So one day I mixed the
special stuff with milk,. as
directed - and the phone rang, I
WASN'T long on the phone but
when i got back to the mix,
there was a bowl full of fluffy,
bubbling stuff that surprised me.
I quickly stirred in the right
number of eggs - and the fluff
disappeared. My scrambled eggs
had nice flavor but were just as
flat and tough as ever!
Some day I will buy another
package of that good sounding
stuff and have the eggs all ready
- and the phone off the hook -
and I'll try it again. Gr -r -r -r!
Enough for the gripes
department. Let's talk about
something more exciting like
`Christmas lighting and.
decorating of the homes about
Town.'
When the snow is blowing and
it is cold and miserable out,
there's nothing that brightens
your outlook on life quicker,
than the glow and twinkling of
colored lights.
When we were new to
Goderich, one thing that made
us love the town. was the
beautiful colored lights
hemstitching the Courthouse
Park and lighted all the time. I
could be wrong on the "all the
time" bit, but anyway, I'm sure
I could have hated the place very
easily - as that was the year that
we had the terrific snowfall and
I had never in my life seen so
much snow!
Goderich was known - for
many years - for their colored
lights looped around The Square
giving it a festive air "cheerful as
a carousel" - when you went
round and around the circle.
Speaking of . the "circle" or
The Square - I'm glad someone
finally decided to spotlite some
of the nice trees. It is a start to
"better lighting."
Just wait until the fluffy snow
is on those trees and the light
andshadows make them look
like something out of a fantasy.
So, we are going to have some
prizes for people, who out do
others in their home' decorating
- outside that is. It can be just
pretty, comical, religious - or
whatever you want to make it,
but just DO it.
I started on my Christmas
cards -- to people I can't say
"Merry Christmas" to. So if you
don't get one - call me - and
I'll tell you, "I wish you the very
best of everything .at Christmas
',and for the coming year!"
It is those who are far away,
that we don't see too often, that
we should send the cards to. I
feel that if you can clasp their
hand or kiss their cheek - that is
a REAL Christmas greeting and
Cards are unnecessary.
Christmas is the perfect time
-to say what. is so true, that
EVERY day is happier just.
knowing folks like you and
that • is my sentiment on
Christmas greetings!
Oh - back tt5 the happy
lights. Have you noticed that
some people - like Mary Howell
= have had their nice lights on
for weeks now? Thanks,' Mary,
you sure brighten up that corner
with your beautiful flowers all
summer and your nice lights all
winter. - and I'm not kidding -
I'm sure she had them on ALL
.winter!
I would like to have the lights
on from the first snowfall to the
last one - but I get voted down.
"Are you working for the Hydro
or something?" I am scolded but
I still enjoy people who are
braver - or maybe richer than 1
--"altho' the lights aren't that
costly.
We sure waste money on a lot
of things that don't do any good
- ' for ANYONE. and bright •'
lights brighten faces as quickly
as a bright smile. So THERE!
The Harbouraires, under the.
direction of George Buchanan,
'Ed Stiles, bless him, (for all his
piano playing and other good
works) tells me' they have been
busy. Their last three
engagements were entertaining
at Huronview, Nov. 26, singing
for the Blind Dec. 3 at Victoria
St. Church and Monday night at
the Goderich Psychiatric
Hospital. Thanks Ed we like • to
hear about the boys.
I understand the choir of
North St. United Church will
repeat the choral service and
cantata of Sunday - 14, on
Tuesday evening at 8.15 in the
church. You are all invited to
this wonderful singing event and
you will enjoy singing along with
the Christmas carols. : •
Well, . Santa arrives THIS
Saturday and everyone is,
hustling and fussing to complete
their entry for the parade.
I don't know if that cow is
going to jump over the moon or
not, but I'll bet, she is going to
try. If the dish and the spoon
run away there's going to be
trouble. Perhaps one of Santa's
helpers will stop them or one of
the three , men in the tub or
Frosty the snowman might catch
them - at any rate the little dog
is just -sitting there laughing.
What happened"to the cat?
I hope we have a little snow -
not too much - so that the kids
from Candy Land can show
Alice what Wonderland really is.
Charlie Brown and Friends are
going to be on hand, -i just hope
he doesn't get mixed up with the
old woman in the shoe with all
those little rascals. Perhaps we
can ship some of them to the
moon. -
I don't know if the big bad
wolf is on board but the three
little pigs, are sure to, be safe in
the house of brick. What with
kids kits kats and mice and all

those clowns - I'll wish I was
having Christmas on the farm.
We have about six groupings
and I think the extra individual
entries will be a big surprise.
We have the whole Saddle
Club on hand ,and these
wonderful riders and their steeds
will thrill- the youngsters and
oldsters. -
We are fortunate to have
bands for our parade - just hope
it isn't too cold for them to
play. We have many • helpers
from Santa's workshops, and we
feel our first parade is a good
one.
I just hope those who were •
not able to take part Lin this
year's parade will . have some
ideas for the one NEXT year. We
at least have made a start and I
hope you won't be too critical.
After all we are new at this and
next year should be a little easier
if we can preserve some 'of this
year's efforts.
Be sure ' to tell your
youngsters that Santa will greet
them in the auditorium of
G.D.C.I. -r South St. entrance -
on Sunday - the day after the
parade. From 2 until 5 p.m. he
will say Ho, Ho, Ho to the
yerungsters and listen to their
'wishes.
Santa's helpers will have treats
for them and there is only one
hitch in our plans - we couldn't
make satisfactory arrangements
about taking their photo with
Santa. The only thing now is
that if you have a flash camera,
• mother, you could take some
snaps of them talking to Santa,
for your album. We are really
sorry and we sure tried, but we
felt it was too difficult and
expensive and we will have
better arrangements next year.
I have one last word - and
this is for our SKI -doodlers, and
very important.
On Saturday evening - at
seven o'clock - early so it won't
spoil any later dates you may
have, there is to be an open
meeting at MacKay Hall to
discuss the controls 'which may
be . clamped on ski-doos or
snowmobile owners in this town
With s iese little machines
racing all over town at all hours
of the ni t, there was bound to
be complai ts. Remember all the
fuss °when the motor bikes hit
here not so long ago?
You SHOULD attend this
meeting and express your
opinion op this restrictiire bylaw
which is bound to come. SOON.
You should be able to say where
and when you should use your
machine and if no interest is
shown at this meeting you'll just
have to take what comes up and
abide by it. Do try to be there.
The `Rec Council' are hoping
to set up a winter sports
program with facilities in the
town. Ice skating - out in the
open, tobogganing, skiing - and
the ski-doos. There should be an
outlet for family fun.
The family that plays together
- stay's together - and this day
and age we sure need more
togetherness.
There ARE many facilities in
and around town and we wish to
see these developed. We need to
know what you require. How
about helping to make this a
-good sports program?
Will everyone ' - just
EVERYONE - pray for good
weather this Saturday - please?
Martha
FUNNY YOU

Cullen, Ted Zeigler, Barrie Baldaro and Joan Stuart (clockwise)

rib -tickling comedy show, heard Sundays at 5:03 p.m. EST. De-
scribed as "a kind of updated Spring Thaw out of The Goon
Show by Laugh -In with overtones of Playboy", Funny You Should
Say That also features singer Sheila Graham and the Tony
Chappell Orchestra.
