Space literature is becoming very popular at the local library
and is available in libraries throughout the county. The interest
is. not confined to the public libraries however, as schools also
have a good selection. Looking over some of the books at
Robertson MemorialPublic School of is David Best, a grade 7
student. - staff photo.
Space books popular at county libraries
While browsing in 'the library the other day, I noticed a small
boy peering anxiously over the edge of the librarian's desk. "Have
you got any books on rockets?" he asked.
She told me later that the demand for spcice stories is
increasing every day. Animal adventures and shoot -em -up
westerns bare practically passe. We began investigating and found a
wealth of information on just about every topic in our new age of -
space. There isn't room to review all the books, but here are a few
of the outstanding ones available in the Huron County libraries.
LIVING IN SPACE
The Astronaut and His Environment
by Mitchell R. Sharpe
(Doubleday,, 1969; 192 pages)
Mitchell Sharpe has been associated with space vehicle research
for the past thirteen years, and is a contributor onastronauticsto
the Encyclopaedia Britannica and its annual Book of the. Year. He
reveals the hazards of being human in an alien environment,
covering such topics as the effects of the body on noise, lack of
oxygen, radiation and weightlessness. Also, the mental dangers of
isolation. He shows us, in detail, the space suit and space craft,
explaining the necessity.for each button and valve.
A special feature is the chapter on the valuable medical "by
'products in use today as a result of space research. For
examples, a 'wheelchair controlled'' by the movements of the
invalid's -eyeballs, -and- a--computer-controlled artificial patient for
use by medical students.
Sharpe points out, in layman's language, man's contribution to
space and why man is the necessary factor. Included are many
1--° informative photographs and diagrams. This book, available at
Goderich Public Library, should be at the top of your reading list.
SPACETRAC K
Watchdog of the Skies
by Charles Coombs
(New York, W. Morrow, 1969; 128 pages) -
Did you know that there are over 33 hundred objects in orbit
around theearth at this moment, ranging from highly
sophisticated weather and telecommunication satellites to burned
out rocket motors and objects even as small as an astronaut's
glove? °
This :book tells about • the highly complex system of radars
situated around the world and a city of computers in a cave in
Colorado that track and record all these bits and pieces. It shows
why such a system was necessary, not only for the defence of the
North American continent, but also to keep track of all these
flying articles. This system can predict almost the exact instant an
object will fall from space'. .
Charles Coombs Utes his well known ability to translate
technical material into , layman's language making the book
enjoyable reading for all. The . book is at -the Clinton Public
Library and can ,be obtained 'through the public library at
Goderich.
EXPLORING THE PLANETS
by Roy A Gallant ,„
(Doubleday, 1967; 119 pages)
Roy Gallant, award 'winning author of "Exploring the
Universe," presents this excellent book on the history of the solar
system beginning with the 'exciting birth of each of the nine,
major planets and the formation of their._ satellites.
Mercury Mars, Earth, Saturn and Jupiter come alive as
"illustrator John Polgreen displays them in an array of vivid colors.
Included is a complete table of planets showing their distances
from the *sun, diameters, their satellites, and your weight,on each
planet. At the Goderich Library.
APPOINTMENT ON THE MOON
by Richard S Lewis
(Neve York, Viking Press; 434 pages)
A full-scale account of the space program and the events
"leading up to the decision to, gQ ahead. If you want the complete
inside story, including the space tragedy that paralyzed the entire
program, this is the book. Available at Clinton and Goderich
libraries.
