Fast drivers are
'sexually insecure'
If,,,you are a man who drives
aggressively you could be
displaying the fact that you are
sexually insecure, according to a
London, England, psychiatrist.
Men who show off by driving
fast and aggressively may really
be trying to impress others with
their masculinity, says Dr. Leslie
Morrish. "The whole meaning of
driving is associated with
virility," he says.' "If other
•esP people see a man driving fast and
well -then he feels other people
would consider him a good
lover."
Dr. Morrish, who. has just
made a non-stop 10,000 -mile
study of three men in a Royer
• 2000 ,adds: "Driving a car
aggressively can be a man's'
subconscious attempt to impress
on others a virility which he is
really'insecure about.
"Subconsciously this type•of
motorist feels that if others see
• him driving well (with calm care)
they would consider him to have
a
an inadequate virility."
The (Doctor told the Public
Service Division of British
Leyland Motors, manufacturer
of Rover cars, that when a group
of men share the driving each
attempts to displaY that he is the
best driver, implying he is the
most manly, and sexually the
most attractive.
However, the doctor
concedes much more research
has to be done on the subject.
This type of research is part
of a vast program being
conducted by British Leyland in
an effort to discover what can be
done to make the driver of a car
safer. British Leyland feels
legislation to make ears
crash -proof, skid -proof,
roll -over -proof, and
anti -pollution perfect are fine -
but all is lost if the driver, a
complex human, is left to being
just that, in an intricate piece of
machinery.
Mr. Starr assured the 125
guests at , the dinner meeting
that, "As long as ' you have
people willing to put on a fair,
then you deserve to have that
fair." He said that at one time he
thought the county fair would
be better than several smaller
fairs, but after being closely
associated with fairs he had
changed his mind. ,
"Over the years," he said,
"some fairs will amalgamate, but
that will be the choice of the
community. I shall make no
such. recommendation." He feels
fairs serve a very useful purpose
and that agricultural societies
should be cherished.
"With the shift of population
from rural to urban, fairs will
provide a common meeting place
of rural and urban people. Fairs
are a place • that people will
return to year after year -to
meet people, to renew
acquaintances, to exchange
ideas, to see if there is anything
new," he said.
He spoke of the enjoyment
children get out of fairs -the
parade,. the merry-go-round, and
so on. He stressed that young
people don't need critics, they
need examples. He spoke of the
stresses young people- 'have to
face, •
M. Starr said plowing
matches go hand in hand with
fairs, they are a Community
effort, and he said he would like
--to-see-more-interest-in-them-at-
county level. He hopes
townships and counties will
continue „to support the
Plowman's Astociation with
grants. r° "When you see a good
plowman, , you see a good
farmer," he said.
Mr. Starr said he was happy
to see the large number of young
people present at the meeting
and said he hoped that the '
Queen of the Furrow event will
be built up and given _proper
redognition at the International
level.
He concluded; "At fairs and
plowing matches you have a lot
of opportunities to do
something for your
communities."
The president of the
association, Maurice Love, RR ‘3
Exeter, challenged the mayors,
reeves and the warden of the
county to enter the plowing
contest -perhaps against
members of the news media. o
While thanking John Rodges, ,
RR 1 Goderich, for the use of
his farm this fall for the site of
the 42nd annual Huron plowing
match, Mr. Love invited other
farmers to offer their farms to
be used for the local matches.
Mrs. Love, who has been in
charge of the Queen of the
Furrow event, presented the
Love trophy to the Queen, Miss
Mary Leeming, RR 4 Walton,
and said it is not a frill but the
event has real value. She feels it
*helps young women to
communicate with people.
