The Goderich Collegiate Vikings Senior football team put the cap on a perfect season here last Thursday when they blanked the Wingham Mustangs • 33-0 to capture the Huron -Perth Conference championship. The game„ played on a dry field under perfect fall conditions, attracted a great deal of attention from local, residents, as well as studepts from both schools. A crowd estimated at • a' • • defeat W in ghiiv,m140000# close to 3000 attended and the game was broadcast on CKNX radio. The Vikings however, seemed unaffected by -'the pressure, as they rolled to /their eighth consecutive victory .this season to defeat a clearly outgunned Wingham squad. As the saying goes, the Vikings "came to play." Again it was the almost invincible defensive platoon which set scoring plays blocked kick, up the for the Vikings. A three pass interceptions and a fumble recovery lead to the five touchdowns the Vikings, scored. Brown carried jt in from there for the T.D.' /he victory gave the Vikings their fourth league championship in the eight year history of the Conference. One of these was a co -championship with Wingham. On two other occasions the Vikings have been in the league final. However, this year's team has to rank as one of the greatest ever to represent G.D.C.I. Their defence was the scourge of the league, and allowed only one touchdownall season. The defensive corps was not big, but they were quick, and they knew their responsibilities. In the final game they beat the ,Wingham offense into the ground by playing as a unit. Their variatiOns on defense kept the Mustangs off balance all afternoon. The offensive line blocked well, and near -perfect play execution in the backfield let few scoring opportunities go by. Coach ' Wayne Horner, the mastermind behind the Vikings success, credited this year's team with having "more poise than any other Viking °team I have coached" Although reluctant to single out individuals because there were "so many kids who did a great job for us all year,", Homer praisedthe.-..work - of Toni Crawford who took ever at quarterback this year; learned the offense, and "gave us much more than we expected." Coach Horner also pzucl tribute to the leadership of team captain Jon Ginn and "Big Al" Pirie, describingit as, "tremendous." Horner was also impressed by the whole team's willingness to sacrifice the time and effort they did. "The spirit and desire they exhibited made them champs," he said.
