I'm a new face at - The ° Signal -Star Publishing Company but I'm hoping we won't be strangers for long. Just for your information I'm new in Goderith, too. I moved here with my family — a husband and three children — during the summer and have just joined the staff at this newspaper. My job. here will be to add a bit of extra sparkle to the women's section of The • Goderich Signal -Star. That's not an easy job Oh, I. can write words all kinds of flowery descriptive phrases — but unless it means something to you, the readers, my work will `all be for nothing. My first big assignment will be to get to know you. I've heard all sorts of silly rumors about having to live in Goderich for ten years before you finally get invited to participate in community affairs. This may be so in some cases; • but I'm a real butt-in-skie (is that how you spell it?) and I'm hoping it won't take us nearly that long to "become good friends. * * * I'd like to be a kind of • go-between ° fold the women of Goderich and area and the whole community. '1 can't do it without your help. I'm looking for information, first of all. I need to know what's going on and where. I • invite you to write me or telephone me. to tell me of • M vs SAVE DOLLARS ON OUR SPECIALS ON ELECTROHOME HUMIDIFIERS AND EUREKA VACUUMS AT Hutchinson Radio — TV Appliances 308 Huron Rd. 524-7831 anything of interest to women that you would like to publicize. It may be a bazaar or a special fund-raising campaign. It, could be a pet project you would like to get off the ground. It may even be a. personal grievance you have that you think pertains to all women in this community. Whatever it is, feel free to get in touch with me. I don't promise to solve all your problems or provide you with scads of free advertising, but I +will listen and help where I can. * * * I'd like to get a line on all the women's organizations in the town of Goderich and the vicinity. Press reporters in the various clubs and groups are my very favorite'people- and I hope to hear from them regularly. If your church group has pot got a press reporter, perhaps you would like to appoint one (that will probably be more successful than getting a volunteer). 'Then asli that gal to give me a call and I'11` be happy to have a little chat with her, outlining the kind of report she will want to hand in after each meeting. And please, don't be surprised if I call some of you during the next few weeks just to get better acquainted and see if there isn't something more I can do to be of service to you. * * * One of the first items of business on my list is to help each of you get ready for the greatest single holiday in the year —.Christmas: I have introduced a Christmas Recipe Exchange this week and I'm hoping some of you good cooks will sit right down and, scribble out your favorite recipe. The idea is to give one and get back a dozen or more — that sounds more than fair, doesn't it? As I have indicateiFin the • Christmas Recipe Exchange box, there is absolutely no necessity to have your name included with your recipe unless you want it there. Your contribution will be• our secret. I know there are many of you girls wlio are fine cooks. A certain amount of it comes with experience and natural skill but a, large pari of it is the result, of a good recipe. It is just the recipe I want. You will get to keep your experience and natural cooking and baking skills. Come on,• girls. Let's hear from some of you. * .* * •••••40••••••••••••••••••••••••••• C -I -L OUR Christmas decorations are so important at this time of year. They give you that extra bit of excited energy you need to get you( through the busy days ahe0d. I'm not a real whiz at decorating but,I've discovered an inexpensive and practical way to make a pretty holiday table. You will need a white or ecru lace tablecloth. Some of them these days are perma-pressed delights and of ,course, there are •less expensive models to choose from. Then buy a few yards of o colorful cotton — red and green are best to give the Christmas touch. Hem the ends, spread it on your table, cover with the lace cloth and add a few cedar boughs and a pair of fancy candles. After Christmas, launder the Christmas cloth and put it away. If it is green, use it again for St. Patrick's Day in March. If it is red, add some hearts and flowers for Valentine's Day. Make a mauve or yellow cotton under -cloth for Easter. It is such a wonderful way to change your table to suit your mood. • * * * You may not think so but it is time to start addressing Christmas cards: ' About this time of year, I like to get my cards and keep them, a pen and my address list close to my favorite easy chair. It .then becomes a simple matter to address five -' or six cards in a few spare moments. You would be surprised how easily they get addressed . and how much more you enjoy doing it. Then before 'Christmas, bundle the cards up with they. proper postage and take them to the post office. No rush and`very little fuss! * * * I understand Goderich families at one time enjoyed the services of a nursery school. At the present time, none is operating in the town. I wonder why. Was there no interest on the part of parents? Or was it a lack of staff to`manage it? Do you think there is need of one now? Has there been any recent discussion on it? .. If you have the answers to these questions, or indeed any. information to share on this subject, won't you write or telephone me c/o Woman to Woman, Signal -Star, Goderich.
