Play Wingham today 2:30 p.
Vikings, in final game
BY T. D.
• The Goderich Vikings
powered their way into the
Huron -Perth Conference ,senior
football final with an impressive
36-8 victory over the Stratford
Central Ramblers in
sudden -death semi-final play
here last Thursday.
The final game takes place
today (Thursday) at 2:30 p.m..
when the Vikings host the
Wingham Mustangs.
Wingham, who finished
second behind the Vikings in
regular season play, qualified for
the final by defeating Listowel
Blue Devils 29-8 in the other
semi-final contest. -
Fullback Dale Wardley was a
one man gang for the Vikings
offensively, scoring " four
touchdowns against Stratford.
Wardley has been a real find
for Coach Wayne Horner this
season.\ Coming here from
Wingham, where he played for
the Mustangs last year, Dale has
developed into a smooth running
back who can be `relied on to get
the necessary yardage when the
chips are down.
'The Vikings other
touchdowns were scored by
fullbacks Gary Lounsbury and
Ron Brown.
Stratford's scoring came on a
75 yard T.D. pass from
quarterback Ron Johnston to
end Ted Wilson and two singles
kicked by Don Willis.
The capable ball handling of
Viking quarterback Tom
Crawford and the effective
blocking of Pat O'Brien, Randy
Schmidt, Bruce Fisher, Mark
Ryan, Al Pirie and Jon Ginn
along the line opened up the
holes for Wardley's outside
running and Brown and
LounSbury's inside gains.

Redmond, Bill Westbrook and
Bill Wedlock were -towers of
strength for the Vikings:
The contest was a rugged one,
and was branded by Coach
Horner as "one of the dirtiest
games I ever witnessed." The
Goderich cause was helped by
several roughing and
unsportsmanlike , conduct
penalties assessed agafinst
Stratford. Three Rambler
players were ejected from the
game for personal fouls.
To the Vikings credit was the
fact that they stuck to football
and probably inflicted more
damage with their hard tackling
and blocking 'than the Stratford
team did with their less
respectable tactics.
Horner stated he had "never
been prouder of a team" in
reference to the Vikings
avoidance of illegal response to
the Ramblers' violence. 44
In the long run, however, it
was the Vikings' ball control
that won the game for them. On
several occasions, they gambled
on third down situations to
retain possession and sustain
long drives into Stratford
territory. The Vikings did not
punLall afternoon.
Looking ahead to the
championship game with
Wingham, Coach . Horner
revealed his game plan centres
on stopping the Mustangs option
play.
The Vikings will use he same
defense that . held Wi gham's
offense to two first downs in the
regular season game which the
Vikings won 29-6.
The Mustangs cannot be taken
lightly, however. They have
° ood size and speed, and a slow
Feld could be to their advantage.
Horner comments • that, "They
are excellent mudders, and mud
will hurt us because we rely
solely on speed because of our
smaller size."
The Vikings and Mustangs
have met three times previously
in I-u-ron.P.e.-rth - _.football
playoffs;; in 1963 Wingham
defeated Goderich 19-13 in the
final, in 1966 the two teams
were declared co -champions after
a 7-7 overtime final, and in
1967, the Vikings lost 7-6 to
Wingham in the semi-finals. This
leaves the, Vikings without a
victory over the Mustangs in
