The Goderich Signal-Star, 1969-10-09, Page 5e s s iw Round and About With Martha • • This is. the year we are to have really outstanding colors b all around th,e country -- in our trees and other foliage, Even now there are some shaip contrasts in fall colors to be seen. I'm always thrilled by this — but a little sad, too, when I think it will be gone all too soon, and it is February before I begin to see the beauty of winter. (I'm just starting to thaw out by then.) We are due for a lot of hazy and foggy days but on the clear` days the view from the bridge above the golf course looking up or down the river is just fascinating, and I find I am not. the only one who has to stop for just a few minutes to look at it. Our places to "stand and stare" are always occupied — all around the clock - and it is nice to see that our parks people realize how important it is to all of us to have . these places so well cared for. But, you all know I think the Parks people have done a tremendous job and deserve our "Thank you!" ` ha -n> -t gealaY shortly and I hope you all plan a leisurely jaunt around the country. Get off the highways, leave them to the people who are in such a hurry to get nowhere. They have no time to enjoy "color trips" — or hunting for hickory nuts. By the way ARE there any hickory nut trees in this part of the country? This 'is also a good time to plan to take mother — and the whole family — out for dinner — and where did you ever get a better home cooked meal than that served — home style — at the Tiger Dunlop Inn? Just 'be sure to let them know you are coming as they are surely busy on these special days. October 25 — Saturday — the ladies of the Taylor's Corners district plan to. have their bazaar and all that goes with it — as well as that delicious dinner — their chicken salad plate. These hardworking gals make this their one BIG day of the year. Their excellent needlework and other crafts, baked goods, candy, and such are quickly sold, so be there early. (2:30 p.m. opening). They also feature farm. products and produce: Vegetables, apples, honey, jams and jellies, pickles and many other things in this line are there for you, They will deliver the dinner — or supper — to 'any of you and where could you get one for a dollar in this day and age? Every penny they make goes towards charity. They support the Cancer Fund and have a Korean orphan to 1ake,care of, as well _as - helping the blind ' and other deserving groups. So, there you are for the 25th. On the following Wednesday — the 29th — the Country Crafts have their Christmas Country Fair. I don't know why they don't have it for the three days since it has become so well-known — and so crowded A "MUSTANG" THEATRE PHONE 524.9981. Wednesday Oct. 29 and Sat. Nov. 1st. I was happy to hear a bit more about some of the people who are "featured"or outstanding at this fair. J To increase public awareness and, understanding of Handicr fts, the Colborne ladies wduld like you to know something about some of these crafts people. Their 1969 fair, features Mrs. Martha Wikholm who is a lady of many talents. Mrs. Wikhoim lives on a farm near London. Born in Sweden she received her weaving education in Stockholm and taught weaving in Sweden for six years before emigrating ,to Canada, As a busy farm wife she still finds time to weave and teach. "Rya Rugs" are her specialty and these are of wool on a woven linen background., Each bit of wool is knotted by hand. Hours of labor and love go into each rug which has a story to tell you and you will find her "Early Spring in the Country" particularly 'appealing. She also will ' display —handl ,v—eiL,1 .osk ab b -, and tapestries of Scandinavian embroidery. And can you top this — ? — this charming lady will also have some Swedish bread and other delicacies made in her kitchen. Another new Canadian Mrs. Koop de Groot, RR 4, Goderich, will have Dutch' embroidered `"miniatures." By counting threads, tiny Dutch figures of fine cross-stitch make beautiful little pictures about four -to five, inches in diameter. VERY nice. Newcomers to last year's Art -Mart, Mrs. Larry Montieth and her mother, both _ farm wives from Lambeth, will have a fine display of . leatherwork, exquisitely carved jewellry, desk sets and flowers, for which they have won many awards in competitions. Speaking of prize winners, they expect to have at least three other ladies -exhibiting — and selling. Mrs. Laurel Glousher of Blyth has fascinating embroideries as will Mrs. Wes. Heimpel of Wroxeter and Mrs. Oliver McCharles of Ashfield — who also has hand made dolls and doll furniture. Mrs. Hector Cooke of Bogies Beach — native of this area — has "apple dolls" • — very unusual and attractive and other . novelties which are cleverly made. Now, I said the fair was crowded — but this year they hope the extra rooms the ladies have. worked so hard to make available, -will give some breathing space and give you a better chance to see — and touch many of these fine handicrafts. The next bazaar of note that I happen to know about, is Knox Church Ladies contribution. I will tell you more about it irext week, but for now, • mark Nov. 8 on your calendar for this affair. I was happy to hear the youngsters of First Baptist Churc'h-- "Crusaders" group are starting work on their Christmas float. Contributions of clothing, toys, etc., etc. are very welcome and if you would come to their office in October and early November, it will give them time to sort, select and wrap these things in time for Christmas. See Miss Clare McGowans Letter to the Editor ,— and you will appreciate the work of the group. Re: The Santa Parade: (they fouled me up last week) the ad is in, THIS week. On October 21 Mr. Lee Lytell, of Classic Arts, Stratford will talk to the club on framing your paintings and anyone interested would be more than welcome. He will start his talk at 8 p.m. I've left my most important reminder for the last item — as you, should ALL take notice — ' men and women — of this date. Oct. 28 at the rec. centre, CFB Clinton, — a • very important evening planned by the Huron Unit of Canadian Cancer Society to inform the public about all types . of that dread disease CANCER. Many people worry and wonder, but hate to go to their doctor about the many ways Cancer can strike. them. So — even if you have to hire a cab you should go to this mass meeting on the 28th. Anna Meyer " of CKNX is mistress of ceremonies for the evening, Don Gray, 'ETV, London, will begderator of a distinguished panel and Suter St. William is co-ordinator of education of the Ontario Division of the Cancer Society. This wonderfully revealing night is sponsored in connection with the coming Woman to Woman Week. Do --attend and get -rid-of those petty -worries — take your husband as he too has worries.
