Did you ever lose such a thing
as - your OVEN mitts?
Don't laugh - I'm serious -
lost amine for ' about three days
and. I was really puzzled. Where
would you leave oven mitts --
what did I use them for the last
time I had them on?
Now, I use mine - not just
for taking things from the oven
but other things - as I now
realize - and I just HAVE to
have them for those heavy frying
pans which have only HOT iron
handles.
Well, I cussed a little every
night and took a quick look here
and there, but, no good old
mitts.
Guess where I found them -
only one guess, smarty in the
OVEN of course - where else?
Of course, then I remembered
putting them on the racks in the
still -warm oven. as I had- wetted
them while defrosting the ',frig.
So oven mitts have many uses.
What else is,,new? Well -
Here we go on the Christmas
Parade. Too early? It sure is
NOT - and I'm gonna tell you
why - (Remember Carleton
Worsell with that phrase in
what was it - "Charlie's Aunt"?
- Well, one of the plays where
• he just had them rolling off their
chairs?)
To start with we have settled
the date - December 13 a
Saturday. We've ordered nice
weather so just keepthinking
about it and we WILL have a
• nice day. We have to have a
theme for the parade - and
what do you think of
"Christmas for children" so this
means we are going ALL OUT to
make this a parade the kids will
love and remember. •
We need floats with their
favorite people the centre of
attraction - and these should be.
the Disney characters, nursery
rhyme and story book characters
and people who know how to
make children laugh.
We've sent our order in for a
real live Santa and he will be
here with * lots of toys and
helpers and 'a happy, "HO, HO,
HO," and we have Mrs. Elsie
Blue to thank for a wonderful
Santa float, as she is going all,
out to make it the best there' is
for the old gent, with sleigh and
reindeer. (We may have to
borrow Edna's reindeer but I'm
sure she i11 be
wproud to see
them working. - And Rudolph
- we mustn't forget him.) •
So - what characters or story
are YOU , going to use on your
float?
There are lots of wagons and
tractors, ask Tom Fortner - and
if you can't make the costumes
for them we have gremlins lined
up who will help you - all we
• need to know is - what
characters do you need to dress?
I think by the time this
parade is over, Mrs. Howard
(Elsie) Blue will be nick named
"Mary Christmas"! She is the
leading light in getting the ball
• rolling. I can talk up a storm and
get you thinking but it takes a
REAL person to step up and say
"O.K. let's get going," - and
really get it GOING!
So, now we must all do ALL
we can to make it a success, and
this means we must spend time
and effort - and, some money to
I show we can do it. It isn't fair to
sit back and say "I haven't time,
etc. etc." You can help by
paying for or towards some of
the costumes and other expenses
' which clutter up any - parade.
How about THAT? .
The workers, who don't
really want totell you how
much fun and satisfaction you
are missing by not participating,
will be right in there building
Mother Hubbard's shoe - 'scuse
please, cupboard and dressing up
the kids or building a corner for
Jack Horner and (that's not
OUR Jack Horner - - he's in
Sarnia, I believe) getting houses
for the "Three Little Pigs" and
the Big Bad Wolf!
We hope the church groups
will have the nativity scene with
real live angels and other
Christmas themes:
.. I'm sure our .youngsters will
have floats -,.entered from each
school ;- including G.D.C.I.
and I'm looking forward to
THEIR efforts.
These young people can
really..cgpie .up with great ideas
but we want it "Christmassy"
kid stuff. We don't want a lot of
cars with a few paper flowers on
them - they HAVE to have a
story or be a character - or they
can't compete for the prizes -
and there are going to be some
real good prizes, Honest injun.
We are inviting ALL of
Goderich and district . to
participate in this years parade.
We need to know what story or
characters you will be and
MUST know it for next week.
This way we can get going on
costumes, make your fairyland
character "head" - if you need
it - and' also have no

; duplications of floats. We
already have a lot of fantasy
figures or fairy-tale figures
available that could be used.
You can. fill out the form in
this weeks paper regarding the
parade and get them in to us.
Doug Cruickshank is our Kin
guide We will have a meeting
Monday October 6 at Mrs. Blue's
and you may come with your
ideas and we will help carry °"
them out. "
• Now, don't you think that
sounds good? Oh - the extra
good part is yet to come - as we
plan to have Santa talking to the
little ones on Sunday - after he
gets the parade over. He will
probably be in the school
auditorium -- or the arena - and
the children will have a chance
to have their picture taken with
him besides getting THEIR
candy. No big kids allowed to sit
on Santaas knee ,- this is for the
"Believers" only!
So, Jackie and Jim - aren't
you sorry you are in Florida and
._missing all this? We are going to
have fun and surprises, so, wish
you were here!
I see the girls in the GOderich
and District Association' for
Mentally Retarded Children are
once again ready to do a
tremendous job to help give the
mother ofa retarded youngster a
few hours rest once in a while.
She will be free to leave her little
ones in capable hands while she
shops or gets a hair -do - or just
falls apart for an hour or so. This
is wonderful and I know these
mothers really appreciate it. -
- Why don't YOU give the girls
a hand, some time? Call Mrs.
Harper 524-7642 or Mrs. J.: D.
MacDonald. Your time or your
cookies or' toys will really help
out. .
Mark your calendar for Oct.
29 , Fowl Supper at St. George's
Church. This is always a big treat
- they'll even bring your supper
to you if: -you. can't come out.
Isn't that nice?
Please mark Saturday,
October 25 on your calendar.
The Taylors. Corners Bazaar and
dinner will be held then and you
won't want to miss this treat.
I want you to know my
"better half" is much better - in
many ways - and says thank
you for thinking of him - all
you nice thinkers.
Holniesville
Groups one, two and three of
the Holmesville Nifty Needlettes
met on Monday, September 29,
and completed their third and,
fourth meeting.
Discussions and
demonstrations were held on the
variations of the feather stitch,
lazy daisy and the chain stitch.
A number of the girls showed'
sample ideas for their "free
choice" articles and' explained
how they intended to work their
choices into uses of the various
stitches.
The girls mounted their
samples and included them in
their record book.
The record book and the
"Learning Stitches" articles were
checked and any errors were
corrected.
The leaders agreed there is a
great deal of keen interest in the
groups and closed the meeting
with the 4-H Pledge.

In minutes the building was a
