Most,people, when they think
of daffodils, have visions of
r springtime and golden trumpets. "
While springtime and daffodils
are inseparable, the idea of
golden trumpets overlooks some
rather amazing developments in
the world of daffodils.
Any gardener . who is
undertaking to plant daffodils
this fall should know that they
now come with white, pink and
green trumpets as well as with
yellow. As a matter of fact,
some of the newest varieties
developed in Holland have
changed their tune completely
and have no trumpets at all.
Paradoxically, these'newest of
daffodils are believed to be a
throwback to the earliest
daffodils from which all others
have developed. Rather than a
trumpet, they; have six separate

"collar", segments which, in
most varieties we • 'know,
eventually joined to form what
we now call the trumpet.
Plant researchers theorize that
originally the closed nkpdel of
the trumpet did not exist at' all.
In prehistoric times the
paracorolla, then still very
paltry, must have been split into
six in such a way that each slip
was found just before the
opposite leaf of theperianth.
A few of the showiest of these
"pre -historical" or "split"
daffodils, are: Evolution, white
perianth and yellow collar;
Baccarat, creamy white perianth
and yellow collar; and Flaneur,
white perianth and creamy white
collar.
But when it comes to variety
in daffodils you don't really
have to stray from the trumpet
to find a whole range of
fascinating shapes and colors.
Another thing you have to
consider when planting daffodils
is that You can stretch out the
blooming season by many weeks
if you choose the varieties right.
There are small -cupped
daffodils where the trumpet has
a saucer -like shape, there are
doubles, with many more petals
than the conventional bloom,
t hen there are several
multiple -flowering types. The
multiple -bloom varieties include:
Triandrus, with up to six tiny
trumpeted flowers to a stem;
Tazetta, with up to eight flowers
to a stem. Another variation is
the miniature Cyclamineus type
with, a drooping trumpet and the
petals curved upward from it.
To stretch the daffodil season
to its maximum, here 'is the
sequence of types to plant Inthe
fall for a continuous show
through spring. Cyclamineus
blooms about 10 days ahead of
the earliest trumpet daffodils.
Next in line are the medium and
large -flowering trumpet daffodils
such as' King Alfred, W. P.
Milner, Mrs. Krelage, Beersheba,
Mrs. R. O. Backhouse and
President LeBrun. The
large -cupped varieties appear
next: Scarlet Elegance is one of
the most beautiful. The Tazetta
types are next. They include the
single varieties Laurens Koster
and Admiration and the double
variety Cheerfulness. Finally
there are' the Jonquil hybrids
like Trevithian and Topaz and
the Poeticus varieties , like
Actaea, Red Rim and Recurvus.°
All these hardy Holland bulbs,
should be planted any time , in
the fall. They should be planted
about five to seven inches deep
and just as far apart. They do
not require rich soil and will
endure more winter moisture
than other bulbs.
One reason' for _ planting
daffodils a fair distance apart is
that they multiply vigorously
and need room for expansion if
they are to be left undisturbed
for several years.
For the gardener who is
prepared to dig them up every
couple of years, it is possible -to
plant them quite •closely
together for special effects or
patterns in the garden

What is the correct procedure
if a tire blows on my auto, when
I am driving? •
ANSWER: The answer to that
question can be found in the
1969 Driver's Handbook' which
states, "If a tire blows; don't jam
on the- brakes. Let up on the
accelerator and concentrate on
steering. If you suddenly apply
the brakes when a rear tire
blows, a- tail -sway is set up that
is difficult to control and your
car may turn over. Whether the

steering is most important."
