Rotary travelogue series
starts September 30th
The Goderich Rotary Club
will present its first program of
its "TRAVEL AND
ADVENTURE SERIES" on
Tuesday, September' 30, in the
auditorium of Goderich District
Collegiate Institute at 8 p.rn.
"Aleutian Islands" will be
- narrated by Dennis Cooper.
Mr. Cooper was born in
Spdkane,. Washington. Almost
before Jhe could walk, he
retreated from the city to the
luml?er camps of his father, the
late Senator George R. Cooper.
Dennis loved the woods and
mountains and 'his father had to
almost drag him off to college
where he studied engineering. It
looked for awhile like Dennis
would abandon his woods career
for one in engineering, but he
yielded to the call of "the great
outdoors" and returned to the
mountains of Western Montana,
where he and his brother DON
COOPER, ..ran a logging and
sawmill operation for several
years. Always interested in
photography, Dennis finally
'decided to photograph his trees
rather than • saw them.
He traded his chain saw for a
camera and his logs for film,
and, together with Brother Don,
entered the fascinating world of
Travelogue Photography. Their
films, covering their adventures
and misadventures from the
Arctic to the Tropics, have been
received with• gratifying
enthusiasm , by_ travelogue
audiences throughout the
nation.. Although he is a
newcomer to the lecture
platform, Dennis' quiet humor
and factual presentation have
,'earned him great popularity
wherever he has appeared.
INSIDE PASSAGE AND
ALEUTIAN ISLANDS starts in
Seattle, where Dennis and Don
buy -a fishing boat and proceed
up the Inside Passage to Alaska
and (they think) an easy stake •in
Salmon Fishing. Some of the
most beautiful scenes are- in
Northwest Montana's Rockies
and the lakes. On westward to
the Pacific, we stop at' Spokane,
eastern 'Washington city. We see
the highlights of this growing
seaport and, also the scene of the
recent World's Fair. Here the
Cooper boys buy a fishing boat,
the selection of which was
dictated by budget rather than
taste. This of course meant that
the boat was not in very . good
shape. then follows humorous
incidents as it is readied for the
trip. They set sail for Alaska
through Puget Sound and we
pass beautiful old-world
Victoria, B.C., Prince Rupert,
B.C., and Ketchikan,, salmon
capitol of the world. The "boys"
unlimber fishing .gear, ambitious
to "make .a year's wages in 60
days." The results are more
humorous than profitable. Even
the fish are laughing. Then in
Alaska, we will explore Alaskan
Fjords, Glaciers, cataracts and
towering walls of rock here
create scenery unsurpassed
anywhere in the world. Their
fishing proves profitable only to
the fish so they take temporary
jobs in a logging camp. After
their pockets are in little better
shape financially, the "boys"
take us to 'Sitka, Cordova and
Valdez. We will see. interesting
and informative. seqence on the
taking of King Crabs, and
catching shrimp in Alaskan
waters. At Homer, we will have a
glimpse of the new
Homesteader's mecca in Alaska.
On to Anchor point , where
Captain Cook lost his anchor,
Cook Inlet, bordered ' by
Redoubt and Illiama 'volcanoes,
and on to Anchorage. Then our
trip with the, "boys" takes us to
the Aleutian Islands, the chain
of islands which form nature's
1000 mile long barrier separating
the Bering Sea from the Pacific
Ocean: These islands are barren, .
windswept and sparsely
populated. On one of these —
the Pribilof Islands — we'll find
the mating grounds of the
highly -prized Fur Seal. These are
places that very few people
travel. We will have the chance
to travel without moving from
our armchair. Let's go.
