When faith conquers fear
For God hath not given us the
spirit of fear; but of power, and
of love, and of it sound maid.
Timothy 1: 7
Dr. George Truett, an
outstanding, baptist missionary
preacher accepted an
engagement to speak twice daily
.for a week in one of the most
influential colleges on ,this
continent. Its student body was
large and mature in years. Before
he arrived the president of the
college '.sent a questionnaire to
every student asking that the
students indicate any subjects
upon which they .desired the
guest Preacher to speak. When •
•the answers were tabulated the
president and faculty of the
college, the •visiting minister and
others, were amazed by the fact
that the majority of the large
and mature student body had
made this request: "Let the
visiting minister tell us how we
may conquer fear."
A little girl did not readily go
to sleep at nights; she was a
little bit nervous. When mother
took her to bed she had to leave
the lights on for a time and oft
had to lie down with her. Trying
to break the habit the mother
told the little girl about God's
care .over little children. The
little one said, "Mama, are the
stars God's lights in the
•. ° windows?" "Well," the mother
said, "God made the stars; they
- - are his anyhow, whether they
are lights in His windows or
not." "Does God ever put out
His lights?" The mother said,

"No; we donot see the stars
shining sometimes because the
sun is shining, but the stars are
always shining" too. We do not
see them for the sun, but God
Lnever puts out His lights." "Well,
does. God• ever go to sleep?" Her
mother said, "No; He that
keepeth Israel neither slumbers
nor sleeps." "God is awake all
the time, and His lights are
burning all the time?" "Yes,'
'
said the mother, "Well, then,
Mama, I guess you had better
put out the lights. If God is
awake I • do not need to be
afraid. You can go. I will go to
sleep -by and by. (Dr. T. T.
Shields).
The forgoing illustrates the
attitude of true faith. The
Saviour said, "Let not your
heart be _troubled, neither let it
be afraid!" Faith conquers fear
when faith enters the mind,
enthrones the heart and enlists
the will, 2 Timothy 1:7.
WHEN FAITH ENTERS
THE MIND
God's gift 'the spirit of a
sound mind' is one to be
cherished. By our thoughts we
condition our inner lives. A man,
after his medical examination,
asked, "How am -I Doc?" The
doctor replied, "Oh you're
sound as a dollar." He groaned,
"Oh, Doc, its not that bad!" J.
A. Hadfield, lecturer in
Psychology, writes, "Emotional
disturbance can produce
physiological changes. A man is
said to be, and may actually be,
blind with rage, speechless with
" terror, dumb with, grief,
paralyzed with fear, and sick
with disgust."
Wheh faith, in God enters our
minds, the climate of our
thinking changes. Members of a
woman's club were discussing
"What is the most important
duty of the modern woman?"
Many views were spoken, when
one stranger said, "It took me a,
good many years to find out
what is my own:" When pressed
to tell her own discovery,
smilingly she said: "Yes; it is to
keep myself 'always sunny and
sane."___
WHEN FAITH ENTHRONES
THE HEART
I remember reading 'about a
woman in the Middle Ages. She
used to go through the streets of
Alexandria, with a torch in one
hand and a bucket of water' in
the other, crying aloud: "I
would burn heaven with this
torch and extinguish hell with
this water." When asked why she
desired to do so, she would,

reply: "In order that man might
learn to love God fo'`r himself
alone." In a crude, mystical way
that woman expressed the higher
mind and holier heart of the
Church in her day. (Possibly fear
was once a great teacher Of the
race and it certainly has had a
role to play in the recent
God-given miracle of man being
able to go and step foot on the
moon as well as leave that moon
and return to the earth. It was
faith that conquered fear when
Neil Armstrong finally, took the
final step on to the moon! Faith
in . God has helped to dispel the
gloom and glorify our God.
'WHEN FAITH ENLISTS
THE WILL
The apostle Paul's order of
the gifts of God listed for young
Timothy is oft the only working
order: power (will), love (heart),
and a sound mind. Faith
conquers fear as the will acts,
the heart- appreciates, and the
mind affirms. However, most
often .the victory of faith travels
in the reverse • order: the
tinderstanding of the. mind. the
persuasion of the heart, the
adventure or exercise, of the will.
John 7'17; Matt. 7:24-27.
The late Edgar DeWitt Jones
spoke to his uncle: "What an
adventure! So small a ship, so
great an Ocean!" "No, not so
much of an adventure as you
think," replied the older man,
"You see the ocean, is charted;
there's a navigator on board and
a plot. The strong liklihood is
that the ship will reach her port,
despite thick weather, storm and
rough waves." Compare. Psm.

New church -will meet
challenges of world
•
From the moment it, `comes
into being, the church to be
formed . by the Anglican =,rand
United denominations_ will be
designed to meet the challenges
of the modern world, At least,
that is the expectation if
recommendations to the General
Commission on Church. Union
are approved by the governing
bodies and the people of the
participating churches.
For instance, the progress,
reporCof the special Commission ,
on Liturgy says that the service
of unification should make use
of contemporary, language to
"express the new manifestation
and set a standard of excellence.
in worship for the new church."
As well as modern language
the worship of the, new church
will also allow for changes in
thought forms and symbolism..
In making its progress report,
the Liturgical •Commission said
that although the forms will be
modern the new church should
maintain continuity with the
past.
At present the Constitutional
Commission is carrying out
studies of a proposed structure
and constitution for the church.
A - draft plan which is still
under study suggests that the
church be organized into a
general assembly, regional
conferences, - dioceses and
pastoral zones.
The newest feature in these
suggestions is the concept of the
pastoral zone. These--r-eas-w.ou,lsl.._....._.-Activities of the General
be formed by grouping together
congregations to form units in
which the local dlergy could join
together to . share in a team
ministry. All clergy would share
in sacramental work, but each
would be free to specialize in
whatever aspect of ministry was
desired.
The idea of the plan is_ to
provide a form of ministry
which is best able to serve the
needs of existing communities.
One minister might work with
youth while another
concentrated on older people
4nd another specialized in
counselling.
The Comfnission on Doctrine
suggests a threefold ministry of
bishops, presbyters .and deacons
with the bishop being elected by
a vote of all levels of church
membership.
The report of the Commission
on_Doctrine says the episcopate
should 'symbolize the unity and
.continuity of the Christian
churc=h.
"Bishops give themselves
wholeheartedly to the apostolic
mission of the church,
transmitting and safeguarding
the doctrine and worship of the
church, and acting as -faithful
pastors to those under their care
and at the same time accepting
the fact that they themselves
were in need . of pastoral
oversight' the report states.
The Commission suggests the
title presbyter should replace the
term minister, rector and priest,
now used to describe clergymen
in the participating churches. •
Duties and function of the
deacon, the third 'order of
Ministry in the new church, is
still under study by the
Commission.
The report on doctrine
recognizes ,the authority of the
scriptures and accepts tradition
as a continuing feature of church
life.

"THE BILE
TODAY"
The Bible Society in Aus-
tralia has produced special
Scripture Selections contain-
ing Chapters 18-20 of John's
Gospel in four languages for
small communities, including
one of only a few hundred.
The languages are: Pine (5,000
who speak this language live
in the western district of
Papua New Guinea) ; Wape
(10,000 people in the West
Sepik district of Papua/New
Guinea) ; Gupapiuyngu (2,000
aborginal people living in
Arnhem Land, Australia) ;
and Maung, (a few hun—
dred aborigines living in
Arnhem Land). These are
good examples of the way in
whioyi the Bible Societies aim
to meet the needs of all mep,
however small a community
they may be.
