Labour Day
dance held
The annual labour Day -
dance of the Goderich and
District Labour Council was held
at Goderich Memorial Arena on
Saturday, 'August 30 with about
200 couples in attendance.
Kerry : McLean of 80 Albert
Street, Clinton, was selected Miss
Union Maid from 45
contestants, some' from as .far
away as Brantford and Toronto.
Mrs. John Buchanan, RR 6,
Goderich; was runner up. Judges
were Mr, and Mrs. B. R.
Robinson. and Mr. and Mrs. W.
Denomme. The winner was
crowned by the past president.
The couples danced from 9
p.m. to 1 a.m. to the music of
the Bluetones. A dinner was
served.
Members of the organizing
committee said this week they
would like to thank all those
who helped make the ball a
success and gave special mention
to Goderich Manufacturing for
the loan of a truck and to the
ladies who prepared the meal.
They said they would also like
to thank the -people who loaned
the chairs and tables for the
event.
Band
concert
Friday
A band concert will be
presented by the Goderich Town
Band on Friday, September 5 on
The Square starting at 7 p.m.
• This possitgy will be the final
concert of the season by .the
local musical group which is
hoping for a good turn out.
School
registration
increased
A total of 13,46$ students
a have registered in public schools
in Huron, County, 618 more
than last year, ,according to a,
report compiled Tuesday by
,James Coulter, superintendent
of the Huron County Board of
Education.
+► Mr. Coulter reported that the
five secondary schools in Huron ,
County ,showed a slight over-all
increase of 174 and 31
elethentary schools under the
Board's jurisdiction reported a
net increase of 212 on opening
4 day, figures for theold Victor
Lauriston School in Goderich
being included in those for
Robertson Memorial School, Mr.
Coulter said. Totals were 8,577
in 1968 and 8;789 in 1969, with
five new ' kindergarten classes
added this fall.

97 ; Robertson - Memorial,

14; Golden Circle, Wingham, 15
and Huron Hope, Huron Park
(new), 11.
There are 264 secondary
school teachers, 327 elementary
school teachers, five teachers for
-the-mentally -retarded-anal n'm
itinerant ° music teachers in the
county.

Deputy Reeve Walter Sheardown pitched the first ball of the
Goderich Industrial League Fastball Tournament on Sunday .to
Doug Keene of eGord's Sports. Councillor Dave Gower was
catching. Keen hit a high foul ball which was caught by a Varna
player. The tournament was reported to have been more
successfulthan had been hoped and could develop into an annual
event. Holmesville won the tournament, defeating London 2-0 in
