Precautions to take whQn removing bees tor Bugged by bees this summer? There are several steps the.. homeowner„ can take to destroy nests built in or near, homes. AlthOugh, bees are normally considered beneficial insects in the pollination of fruit and seed crops and in the production of honey, the _Department of Agriculture at the University of Guelph says that because of the stings bees carry, they may be a hazard. Therefore, under some .circumstances it is desirable that • they be destroyed. Swarming is quite a natural' occurrence. Honeybees often congregate in a cluster which may form on a tree branch or fence post. "If left undisturbed,'? ;says Dr. M. V. Smith of the Department of •- Agriculture, "such a cluster will usually fly off within a day or two, without harming anyone." However, if the presence of a large number of stinging insects makes people uneasy, Dr. Smith aJvises that immediate action may be taken. A beekeeper may be called upon to remove a swarm. Or it may be destroyed by clipping • off the branch on which torie bees • .4 et • • b • THE 13.g.,.BR:ASS. • •;. are clustered, placing it in a sack or carton and burning it. This should be done in the evening when the bees are quiet. • •Certain , insecticides are also effective in destroying bees. Bumblebees produce small nests, seldom holding more than 100 bees. They prefer to nest on the ground, or in strawstacks, ouituildings and ,woodpiles. Dr. Smith says that the nest population dies off in the fall. Wasps build fairly large paper nests of several hundred insects. They attach their nests to the eaves of houses, branches of trees and shrubs and sometimes on or beneath the ground. The Department emphasizes that treatment for removal of bees and wasps should be carried out only in the evening. At that time all bees and wasps are in the nest and' a complete kill is possible. Also there is less risk"Of being stung. ' Further ;information on the' destruction of bees and wasps may be obtained from the Ontario •Department of Agriculture and Food. Publication., 157, Removal of Bees from Buildings and Trees. It's called Zenith service and it's a handy thing to know about especially during the summer months when so .many of us are.visiting away from our home base. If a company has Zenith service ina particular place you'll find their:special Zenith number in their local ad or listed in thV local telephone directory - just as though the company had a store or office right there in town. AlliYou do is call the Long Distance Operator and give her the Zenith number; she'll connect you directly to the distant company. The company with the Zenith service will be billed for your call. It's like reversing the charges on a Long Distance call but it saves you the bother of making the arrangements with the Operator. If you want to conduct some business with a firm that isn't located here in Goderich, check the London-poderich telephone directory. You may find the company has Zenith service here in town. * * If you're writing to us about your telephone service would you be sure to include your telephone number with your corxespondence? Also, if for some reason you are unable . to include your payment card and account with your payment, would you jot your telephone number down on your cheque or money order? This will help ensure that your payment is reflected accurately in the proper records. Often times we have difficulty establishing the identity of a customer who has mailed an item about, his service to us. With the „telephone number marked on the correspondence this problem is eliminated. Did you know that the Canadian telephone industry requires about $6 million worth of plastic materials and that most of this is furnished by Canadian sources? Furthermore, by the year 2000 - only 31 years away - this figure will reach $20 million. * * * 16 0.04.—v4407..41111-•.41.
