The 7 p.m. game was threatened by Rangers beat Sarnia; hold third place • The G oderich Rangers maintained- their ,winning ways with a 4 to 1 victory over the Sarnia Briarwood Rangers in Sarnia last Saturday. Rangers took control of the game from the opening faceoff, but were able to score only one goal in the first half when inside right, George Love, passed the ball through the center and Terry Wilton took the rebound off- the goaltender and slammed the ball into the net. scored all rour goals, Sarnia • has managed to score against Goderich in four games. The entire Ranger team played well with special mention going to the defensive line of Tony Vandongen, Murray McClure, Ron McClure, Len Bakelaar, Rick Fisher, and Howie Gottschalk. Not only did they give 'Moller excellent protection but they also helped the forward line niaintain strong pressure on the Sarnia defense. In the second half, Rangers took the ball on the faceoff and George Love fired a long shot which deflected into the net off a startled Sarnia defender. Later in the half Tony Vandongen shot a corner kick into the net off another Sarnia defender. The game was 'very closely . contested with most of the -scoring chances going to the - Cherubs, Cherubdefencemen, had a few anxious moments too, with John Plouffe, and Tim McNaughton of Vies coming The best chance of the first half went to Wayne Sheardown 'of 'the Cherubs. Wayne broke through the middle all alone only to be robbed of a goal by a great save by Vics goalkeeper Mike Wildgen. HOWIE GOTTSCHALK John Gottschalk scored on a breakaway pass from Terry Wilton. On Thursday, August 14, the Swingers downed the Jets by 28-22: The late rally by the Jets did not come in time to cut down the Swingers lead. On Monday, August 18, the Swingers scored in the last inning to gain a first place tie,for league standing by doowning the Blockbusters 20-19. The Bombers • and the Swingers are tied for first place. The Blockbusters and the Jets are'tied for third place. On Thursday, August 21, the Jets meet the Blockbusters to decide third place. On Monday, August 25, the Swingers meet the Bombers to decide first - place. On, Thursday, August 28th, the winner of Jets and Blockbusters meet the winner of the Swingers and the Bombers. The Cherub pressure finally resulted in a goal midway through. Wayne Sheardown, who played a very strong ' game, forced the ball down the right side and crossed it* in front of the Vies goal.
