Junior B.
in good shape for season
For most 'people at this time
of year, hockey seems like a
pretty remote 'subject. Not so
for members of the Goderich
Booster Club, sponsors of the
Goderich Sifks Junior `B'
Hockey Club. They are- busy
with the planning necessary to
make the operation of
Goderich's top • winter sports
attraction a success.
The financing of theeteam is
always a problem, and toward
this end, the Booster Club is
arranging the' first fund raising
activity for the coming season'. It.
will take the form of a Ohicken
Barbecue to be held Saturday,
August 23rd . in Court House
Park. -0
"Booster " Day" activities
being planned for that day
include clowns and special. •
music,, but most of all, lots of
good food,
The chicken will be prepared
by Clarence Webb, well known
in Western Ontario for his fine
charcoal pit - otffinery artistry.
Booster Club officials are hoping
that at least 1,000 area residents
will . be partaking of his efforts -
that day.
The financial status of the
club is much, more solid than it
has -been at the approach to
many seasons in' the recent past.
Treasurer Jack Evans recently,
reported a • net profit n. of
approximately $100 on last
season's operation, despite »the
fact that the team failed to make
the playoffs, usually a'necessity
-
'for any kind of•solvency.,
Evans attributed .much of the
.success in avoiding ,a deficit to
careful budgeting and control of
the purse strings by manager,
Harry Kerr. .
By way of comparison, the
St. Mary's Lincolns, the other
team of the Central Junior `B'
League which failed to make the
playoffs, is reportedly facing a
deficit of some $1,400. Despite
this, the Lincs will be back again
this year.
The total operating budget for
the Siftos last, season was just
under $10,000.
Club officials are confident
that this year's team will be
stronger competitively than last
year's. Most of the members of
last year's team will likely be
returning and contacts have
already been made with several
potential "import" candidates to
ENJOY THE FINEST FOOD
IN TOWN
Chinese Food
strengthen the team where
weaknesses are known to exist.
The general popularity of
Junior `B' hockey as a spectator
sport is indicated by the fact
that three new entries have been
filed for competitionssn the
strong Central Junior `B' League,
Of which the Siftos are a part. •
The three riew centres to be
represented are , London, Sarnia
and Preston. This brings the
total strength of the League to
1-1 teams. The others are
Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph,
Stratford, Owen Sound,
Strathroy, St. Marys and
Goderich.
