Nobody's fools
There are those in the world who live
under the misconception thatsmall town
„,cops are endowed, with something less
than . average intelligence. This week in
Goderich we have two policemen w1io
have'knocked that theory into a cocked
-hat.
. Constables Melville Greg and Tom
'Fortner, each in°his own way has shown
what ° so called ''small town cops" .are
made of., *
Constable Greg arrested a man last
weekend who would -have slipped through
the fingers of many less alert policemen.
The man asked a seemingly innocent
question: how to get to a service .station.
He. finished up in jail. The constable asked
for identification and when none was
produced took the man to the, police
station for questioning. Subsequent
enquiries with the Criminal Investigation
Division in Toronto revealed the man.was
wanted by Ontario Provincial 'Police in
Stayner foo break, enter, and theft. He is
now back in Stayner awaiting trial.
Strike one for the Goderich Police
Department.
' In the matter of Constable Tom
Fortner, there is probably no officer
anywhere who has more ambition to get
involved in things: •
His latest effort revolves around a
display, of police badges and memorabilia
that will be known as the International
Police Hall of Fame and is already earning
recognition in Canada, the United States
-and Europe.
The display will go on tout of major
cities in Canada and the US and can
invitation has been received to show it in
Europe.
It will occupy a space of 30 feet by 30
feet as a minimum requirement and will
publicize Goderich wherever it is shown.
Welcoming visitors will be a sign .bearing
the legend "The Town of Goderich
welcomes you to the International Police
Hall of Fame."

LIFE!

BRITISH GOVERNMENT
HOSPITAL SERVICES
Here are current figures which demonstrate once again how
hopeless it is for governments to run an undertaking and break even,"
let alone make a profit. The British Government rate for a National
Hospital Services PRIVATE bed has recently been jacked up to $146
per week, while at a London teaching hospital it is now $187 a
week.
Under the private schemes to which subscribers pay $68 preniium
per year, they receive "no limit" cover for hospital charges and up to
$30Qfor'each major operation. The Private Patients' Plan (PPP) has
been able to peg its premium rates for the past seven years. While
these rates last, a man can choose between his chances in the queue
for a National Hospital Services private bed at the rates quoted, or
be assured of a private bed, with no waiting -- and save money.
THE TRIPLE"A'
A columnist recently began to awrd a Triple A to the individual
making the most outrageous statement of the week. Triple A stands
for "AUTHOR OF ASININE ASSERTIONS." The award this week
undoubtedly goes to ° Stanley J. Randall, Ontario's Trade and
Development Minister for his shocking lack of taste in parodying the
tragic triumph of D -Day with the opening of a bakery, saying "D"
stood for "double;' double the sales and double the facilities. It is
hard to realize that such facetious crudity could he excreted by a

of tours arranged this year by
