'Safe Boating Week' starts
next week. A great many, parents
whi3 don't have a boat would-be
very surprised to know how
often -Weir youngsters are in and
around boats . and the, deep
tl' water,''•,You }'should make sure
your child can swim so that in a•
mishap he -has half a chance of
staying alive,,
The recreation program at
Judith Gooderham Park starts
next week. They can still go and
• register for the swim classes.
Besides swimming there is a
* tenific program prepared for
summer activity and I had not
realized how much time and
• money went into "the running of
• this park. At any rate, the
taxpayers' money is well spent
and Wye can be thankful we have
capable and conscientious
people taking care of it.
Congratulations go out to
Patty Wilkin, who goes as .a
representative of this area, with
6 the Young Voyageurs Program
to Newfoundland. She will
spend a week with a family in
Gloverton on the east coast,
north of St. John's. This is a
"coal town" and it will be very
interesting for her learning how
4i people live — especially when it
will be such a great contrast to
Goderich.
She will be touring the area —
probably St. John's and the air
base at Gander, then to Ottawa.
I .hope she gets to see that new
Arts centre which cost us
. millions= and few of ' US will
ever see.
,Enjoy your trip Pat and tell
us about it when you get back.
The Horticultural' Society
have one of their flower shows
this Saturday, June ' 28, at North
• Street United Church. This is
always a wonderful show and
s
well worth the, hour yoti spend
browsing in and around these
interesting displays. f
They will, have some of these
flowers that' you may buy and
enjoy at . home. If we have a,
couple of days of sunshine
before Satiirday, then the roses
will be out ,in full force. Guess
the only thing we • can do is
PRAY for nice weather and I
think we had better start SOON!
With ART M RT and all that
goes with ' it, we need good
weather and July 17 to.19 is not
far away. • Are there any artists or
carftspeople that, you know who
might like to show their work at"
this fine outdoor show? Do give
us ; their names — and we will
contact them at once. Miss Mary
Hornell is president of the Art
Club ' this year and I am,
'convenor for the Art Mart. We
` will welcome all calls.
Did you miss hearing the
chimes from the Court House
clock lately? I know that many
people felt the same as I — that
something was amiss and
couldn't tell what. I'm glad they
are sounding again — you get so
dependant on them.- You just
know when they should peal and
. you seem to be keeping one ear
open • for them all day, altho'
you can't always hear them
because of wind direction you
still know you will catch some
of it before the day is over.
Archie Hunter —
congratulations on `winning the
Strang Scholarship! The kids say
you are a BRAIN! How about
that! Shows they all love you!
More congratulations the
biggest and bestest should go to
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Dixon on
their GOLDEN Wedding
Anniversary. Isn't that just
wonderful!
Martha.

It's finally here; the moment
we've all been waiting for — the
end of school! And, can you
ever tell it when you walk in the
doors .of V.L.P.S. •There are
boxes piled high with texts, note
books, and paper. Bare walls,
and old desks have replaced the
teacher's newer.ones they're had
all year. Moving men have come,
moving the shelves from the
library here, to the new addition
of R.M.P.S. 'Best of all, not too.
very much homework!
It has been a very good year
for us all, though, and I• know
that years from now, we can
look ,back and .thank our
teachers" and friends -for a happy ..
and memorable school year.
Last week, on June 14, the
winners of the field day at our
school went to C.F.B. track and
held a field day with
competitors from Other schools.
Goderich came in second with
the second highest total of
points. We had 74 and Becky
Crawford of 7B, -Mrs. Procter's
_room, was named the
intermediate girl champion.
We had an assembly on June
25, where the Glee Club sang
some lovely selections,
presentation were made, and
sports awards were handed out.
The • Grade 8 graduation is
Thursday, June 26.•
We are all very excited about
it and I'm sure 'the girls will
be at the beauty salons
(although I . doubt they need it,
we're beautiful anyhow) and the
boys at the barber shop (or.
hairdresser • with some of their
long hair): It should be a happy
gathering that night. •
