HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1969-06-19, Page 191M r From the Minister's study KENNETH J. KNIGHT, PASTOR Calvary Baptist Church the generation gap The Religious News Service, - anticipating Billy Graham's New York crusade, reports there may be a "grassroots revival of historic Christianity emerging ' among w the less -evangelistically inclined denominational groups." Could it be that there is a surge of hunger for reality in our. land today, evidenced in the classroom and witnessed in society? Billy Graham noted of today's hippies that they are searching for something they're not finding in society. Well, just maybe we have the answer to today's GENERATION GAP! There-- always has been Generation - - Gap, .Remember backwhen you were young. Maybe it wasn't as pronounced, then, but" yourandards were different from .that of your parents, if you'll stop and think about it. It seems every generation suffers from "departitis..." a departure from lofty ideals, patterns and traditions that were a part of the past. But this the Bible has foretold, reminding us "in • the latter times some shall depart from the faith." We've gone a long way from the quiet and peace of yesteryear, Our fast-moving, high -skirted generation seems to be taking a leap into the unknown, and we` can't help but • believe the end ` will be , cataStrpphic and disastrous. Someone has noted that when Great grandad missed the stagecoach he didn't seem to notice, saying, "Oh well, another one will be along in two weeks.". But today, just miss a bus in the big city and we die ii million frustrations waiting for the next one coming in 20 minutes. (Slightly exaggerated? But you get the point!) What was it we left back therein those good old days that we should have kept? Could it have been that old frame church -house where revival meetings ran to one and two in the morning? Somehow we have drifted away A from Sunday-meetin'- goin', with the Lord's day turned. into the Devil's day., Or maybe I should say -a holy day has become a holiday. Remember when the stores were closed on Sunday, and you 'couldn't go to a movie or even a ball game? Times surely have changed, haven't they? However, more serious' times 'are still ahead. Our Lord'speaks of a generation gap seen cpming when "the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to• 'be ° put to death." Mark 13:12 Micah, too, makes reference to this, saying: "Trust ye not in 'The Bible Today' A ,"Talking Bible" _ Bible records on a record player --- is is one of the services proviid- ed by the, Bible Society. •An example of what this, can mean is given in the exper- ience of Mrs. Martha Posey of Springfield, Ohio, who is 82 years old and lost her sight and most of one leg as the re - iii sult of diabetes. She has been ------eonfined. to -a- wheel-chair-for eightyears. "My friends ask me how I drag throt<igh ;tie long days," she • says: "I don't drag! Anything 'I think I can do =-- I try it. Life's too sweet to. mess it up being sad." Her 4 first priority each day is prayer. Then, "I put on my Bible records; I never ro miss a day playing them. It's almost as if God Himself leap's out • at me." Mrs: Posey, does not merely think of herself a her own needs; she makes ' good use of Bible Society Scripture materials, keeping Portions on hand for visitors r and for—mailing --to--- hospitak patients. Las December she sent out 125 Christmas Scrip- ' Lure Selections as her-hiolida meting and is anctive e b r of the •Bible . meri -"Circle of the Concerned." a. friend, put ye' not confidence in a guide; keep the doors of thy -mouth freim her that lieth in thy bosom. For the son diahonoureth the, father, the daughter riseth up against the mother, the. daughter . in law against the mother in law; a man's enemies are the men of his own house." (Micah 7:6 I)i.d you hear We ain't seen nothin' yet! - as the expression' 'goes. The present generation gap is serious, but it's getting worse, so that ,ultimateyy a man's enemies will be his *ife or daughter or son! Hear me, the further away we get from God the more beastly we become. Why don't we learn the lessons of history that show the cruel corruption of civilizations now buried that bear the epitaph - "they, forgot God!" • Is it possible' our' civilization could be saved and spared such judgment? In Malachi - the last two verses of the Old Testament, we read: "Behold, I will send you Elijah the Prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord; and he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers," lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." Mal. 4: 5-6 u. Wouldn't that. be wonderful.... to see the generation gap nullified; to see a restoration of relations between son and father, and daughter and mother? That this is possible is indicated by the Scriptures, and if it doesn't happen there will -come the curse in the form of judgment upon this earth. Why couldn't God • send a revival that would unite parents with their children, and .restore broken . homes, mend severed family relationships, and heal the _breach existing between sons and dads, and mothers and daughters. Beloved, the promise of God for the last days is to pour out of His Spirit upon all flesh, and we read, "your sons and daughters shallprophesy...! That means that there will be young people who love God who will "stand dp tor righteousness riT declare the gospel which saves men from their sin. Don't you think it's time for all. of us to become dissatisfied with religion that saves no one. All who are a part of that racket are either deceiving others or are being deceived. In the •" spirtual realm, too, there is this generation gap. But God is reaching down right now to accept you if you will only humble yourself, admit you're a sinner, and receive his offer of forgiveness. When the Lord Jesus went to the cross he breached the chasm that divided ,God from man. Suspended between earth and heaven he closed' the generation gap so `that we can be united to God, and as a result be brought to peace one with the other. . Have you heard of the father that had two sons, who were 'enemies, who hated each other? Over his dying body, the father succeeded in bringing the hand of each of his sons together, so that they were united in his death. So Christ closed forever the generation gap thatm existed - between our` God and us. Through ' faith 'in Christ the breach h°as been healed, and we can be saved. Christ today can heal the breach that exists between Wives and husbands, between fathers and sons, between mothers and daughters: If only we will realize the Lord's hand is reaching down to save us and his hand is not. shortened that it cannot save! But we read "Your iniquities have separated between you and 'your God." Isa. 59:1-2. • , God wants to bring you to Himself. So come to the cross, confess your sins to Christ, reach out by faith and take His hand, and discover TITS, forgiveness freely offered to' all who . will ' receive Him as Lord. and Saviour. DESERVING RECOGNITION We are sending yoti this letter to inform you and hopefully the people of Goderich, about the presence of an "outstanding Canadian" living -here " in Goderich. Allen Schade, a teacher at our , school for ; the last four years, has been selected by the committee at Western Ontario University and - the National Selection Committee in Ottawa to serve as a volunteer teacher with the C.U.S.O. organization. (Canadian University Services Overseas) Allen will be serving -for a two year, term in one of the developing Caribbean countries. This job is strictly a volunteer service, with no Canadian salary, which sends qualified Canadians to "serve and learn in over forty countries around the world. We feel that Allen ywill continue to serve the people and children of, the Caribbean as outstandingly as he has done in Goderich. The staff, and many other citizens of Goderich, : feel that since the C.U.S.O. qualifications. are so high, that Allen deserves some kind of -recognition from the people of , Goderich befoxe his departure in July. After all, how many other young people in°this town would give up their salary' and all the other material comforts ' to go and work and live at the standards of the poorest peasants in the Caribbean. Allen is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Waldon Schade of Campbell River, Vancouver Island, B.C. Along with his regular teaching duties, Allen is also an extramural student' at Waterloo Lutheran University, and has recently completed his first year there toward his B.A. degree. Allen is also active in the Boy Scout movement and is ., presently the Skipper of the 3rd Goderich Rover Crew at Knox Church. All who have known and worked ,with Allen agree that here is "truely a citizen that we can be proud of. Allen isn't one that wants praise for his work so we feel that if we inform the Signal Star, that .you will do all you can to give this the front page coverage that ,it merits. I am sure that going to a poorer area to serve is just as important as sending money via OXFAM and CARE. We are grateful to you for anything that you can do to inform the public of this citizen.
