No change in
school boundaries
BY wicHMowonr.e.
John Hendhrson, RR 5,
Seaforth, prompted „rpuch
discussion at the meeting of
Huron County Board of
Education in Central Huron
Secondary School Monday
evening, June 2, when he posed
this query: •
"Is " there anything in the
regulations to say that the
present school boundaries within
the county should stay in effect
indefinitely?" '
Education Director D. J.
Cochrane was quick to remark
that ,the job of the board, if it
wished, would include changing
boundaries; "it was within its
powers.
Mrs. Marilyn Kunder,
Seaforth, went into some detail
about alleged inequalities at
Harpurhey, adjacent to Seaforth,
where there seemed to be some
instances of children going to
the wrong schools, all of which
are now under the combined
,county school board.
"Perhaps the schools are in
the wrong places," commented
R. M. Elliott, representative of
Goderich and Colborne
Townships.
Mrs. Kunder pointed out that
children were being forced to go.
to school at Brucefield, which is
overcrowded, when they desire

to attend the school at Seaforth,
which is under-utilized.
Schools Superintendant J. W.
Coulter said it was "the same all
over. the county," and advised
that if any action were taken, it
betaken on a county -wide basis
after a thorough investigation.
Mr. Henderson couldn't get a
seconder for a motion which
would have changed the
boundaries around Seaforth to
suit local circumstances.
Mr. Cochrane promised that
he would make recommenda-
tions to the board regarding
boundaries, or otherwise "we
will have a mess on our hands."
"Before September?" asked
Mrs. -go W. Wallace, Goderich.
She was informed that it was
"not that immediate."
Mr. 'Elliott pointed out that
transportation was a big item in
changing school boundaries.
"Here we have a case of one
school overcrowded, another
undercrowded; a ridiculous
situation." exclaimed Mr.
Henderson, who brought up the
matter in the first place.
In conclusion the following
motion was presented by
Gordon Moir,'Gorrie and R. M.
Elliott, and ,adopted "That all
students be required to enroll in
the proper schools in September,
in the present jurisdictions."
The county's equalized
assessment for the year 1970
was established at $69,999,380
for county, purposes when -the
council passed a bylaw May 30.
In his first and final report
to the council as Huron's
, assessment commissioner, E. F.
Hall provided , the Mowing
breakdown of the assessment:
.Farm land: $22,020,530;
farm buildings, $15,007,370;
residential land, $2,678,320;
residential buildings,
$20,027,550; commercial land,
$1
,647-,805; ;commercial
buildings, $6,140,570 and
business assessment, $2,477,235.
The only munic' ality in the
county which showed a decrease
in general taxable assessment
was Hensall Village, and
Commissioner Hall attributed
the drop .to the shutdown of a
large milling operation.
Total education assessment is:
public, $64,549,090; separate,
$5,513,620.
Proof that Huron County is
essentially a farming county was
shown in the following figures:
farm assessment represents
52.91 per cent of the total;
residential, -32.43" per cent an
commercial, 14.66 per cent.
Mr. Hall characterized the
county assessing ,department as
an "orphan," not yet adopted
by the .province which will
employ the full staff as of next
year. He said the department is
"iii limbo" because of the lack
of information on its future, but
said he assumed the countywide
p?operty reassessment will begin
on schedule in 1970.
The Galliean Quartette, a recording group from Guelph, will be
appearing at GDC( on. Friday, June 18, in conjunction with the
Living Waters' Crusade, sponsored by the Huron Christian Men's
Association. Dave Rolston, of the sponsoring group, said
teenagers especially enjoy the`mod style music of the group.

No school needed
for subdivision
One—of the items on the
agenda for ,the Huron County
Board of Education meeting
June 2, was in the form of a
question: "Is there needd'. for a
school site in a new subdivision
on Lot 39, Maitland Concession,
Goderich Township?" •
J. W. Coulter, schools
superintendent, reported that
the site was on the edge of town,
approximately across from the
W. A. Sheaffer Pen property. He
recommended that no school
site be reserved in this
subdivision; it comprises only
twelve lots, one of which is
already occupied.
