Tichborne Phone 524-9270 or 524-9365. - 24 • As you may recall Sunday morning June . 1, dawned wet and. dreary,. In many holm in Goderich, Town Band metnbets stared anxiously out their windows • hoping for . fine. ,weather. This was the day' on which the' band was to travel by bus to Paris and Stratford. A long distance call was put through to Paris and we were A sleepily informed that the weather .there had been wet, but Was clearing. The trip was still, on. At 11 a.m. bandsmen in their scarlet jackets, with instruments shining, climbed aboard a chartered bus. With a short stop - for lunch near . Stratford, .they reached Paris about 2 o'clock. Here in 'a park near a small river was a modern and acoustically perfect bandshell, surrounded by picnic tables, benches and various brightly painted amusements for children. In this setting the Town Band played for about an'' hour; old fa7orites like Colonel Bogey, Moonlight • Serenade and Royal Welcome Home, as well as scores from Broadway musicals such as Camelot, South Pacific and the ' Music Man. The citizens of Paris were gracious and . friendly and . the ban4Jeft with Che feeling it -had made many new friends. The next stop was the Victorian Inn at Stratford where the band was• served dinner. Then to the park, located onthe banks of the Avon River, where there is an old but fine bandshell. The time was 6:30 • p.m. and as people ate their picnic suppers and fed the swans they listened to the concert that a few hours before had entertained the people of Paris.' It was a full day fir the band members but a "memorable and happy one" said a member. Goderich can 'be proud of them. There is a wonderful feeling in this group which varies in age frond our six year old mascot Elizabeth McMillan on triangle, to our 60 year. old veteran George Griffiths on . lead clarinet. Our teenage members are clean cut and polite, a credit- to their parents and Goderich," he said. . "The town owes -a special word of thanks to Charles Kalbfleisch who has taken a group of beginners, a ...few veterans returning -to instruments after a lapse of several years, and public school and secondary school students and welded them into a band Goderich heed never be ashamed of," he concluded" -VICTOR LAURISTON SCHOOL This is a copy of a letter 1 sent. to the .Recreation, Board. .1 wonder what the people of Goderich.think about this. H. Gaulev. It is my understanding that it is the intention of the. Town Fathers to tear down the Victor Lauriston School when it is no longer required for a school.' -' ° I think the building should be kept and used by all the people in the. town. The local service clubs could be given a room which they could decorate and maintain at their own expense. The Art Club, the Judo Club, Girl Guides and Boy Scout's ancl' many others would no doubt appreciate having a permanent room in which to have their meetings. The gymnasium could be used for adult sports such . as badminton, volleyball, jogging or any other activities. which they might organize. Something.should be done for the girls In town, especially - during the winter months- when. the boys have hockey- to. keep them busy. I am sure there are many more uses for this building and I would like to see some effort Made to keep it standing because once it is torn down it will be too late to do more .than wish we had the facilities it could provide. Harold Gauley, 249 Britannia Rd. E. Editor's Note: Mr. Gaulev is incorrect when he says he understands the school is to be torn down by the town fathers.. Goderich no longer owns the school; Huron Count' Board of 'Edr4cation does. rhe Recrreatioh Board has twice written to the Board of Rducatidii askir'tg, fi r consideration when • the disposition of the school is brought before the Board. To date, .no discussion has been held with regard to the school, and the Board, apparently, has no' thoughts of tearing i1 down, although it might sell it.- Town council feels the school will revert back to 'the town when vacated and supports the R ecreatrorr Board: NO FLAGS PLEASE Whilst strolling, about our thriving metropolis -of Goderich; I became aware of the fact that many • buildings, especially gasoline filling stations, flew, along with the Canadian flag, the flag of our southern, neighbor, the ,United States of America. Apparently, this is to welcome the American tourists and show them .that we are friendly toward them. I am • convinced that when American tourists come to Canada they want to. see Canadian buildings, Canadian sites and Canadian flags. If they wanted to see American flags they would stay in the U.S. This, amazing as it may seem, leads some of the visitors to believe that Canada is but another American state. Show American tourists Canadian things. After all, that:s why they come to Canada! Diane Gauley. EMEMBER HELP'YUU'i ItEil CROSS TO.lit.LP
