Today OUR giant elms were
felled and the scream and. the
crash of their falling had mi
completely unnerved!
I tried to stay out of the sight
of them, but I wanted to..tell the
men — "Don't let it hit those
other trees," or "make it fall
here — or there." Or — what was
the use -- theycouldn't hear you-
for the roar of the saws - 'and
who are you to give instructions,
anyway.?

The -min on. the saw knew his
business but 'you stood with
your heart in your throat
waiting" for the. 'big
WHU-M-M-PH! One of the trees
which seemed twice as large as
the others, was creating a'
problem. A large section of it
hung close to the house and the
one huge branch which twisted,
and turned itself into a distinct
figure 5 - (if you were looking
at it from my bed) — seemed to
overbalance the whole tree and
more care and figuring had to be
made. {- -
I was watching this one,
from an upper window — which
would have been smashed in had
the tree fell the wrong way —
and I suddenly realized the
smaller tree below it was one I
had planted many years ago. Did
you ever plant a tree while
standing on your head? Well,
that is just about how it seemed
when you were trying to keep a
footing on that steep bank and
dig thro' the rocks and roots at
the same time. There was very
little soil there and I never ever
managed to dig a hole deep
enough, but I planted dozens of
those nice little- maples in that '
rock and a little prayer went in
with each one of them. Very few
ever grew — guess the prayer.
wasn't strong enough!
In panic, I suddenly realized
that that huge tree would
completely smash that nice little
tree and I flew down the stairs'
and out - out in time to see the
death of a brave,little• tree..
THAT did it! I jumped into
the car and away - away from
' that awful crash and earth
shaking thud!
You should never'drive a car
when you ' are under an
emotional strain — anger. — or
any of those things that .blind
. you to what you are doing. It is
against the law to drive if you
are blind! Luckily, I found
myself at the other side of town
unharmed and feeling very
foolish. But I just don't want
another such experience — ever.
Yesterday we were riding out
around the country.,After all the
rain, the streams and ditches
'were overflowing; in *many
places, the back `roads were,.
flooded. .
The driver and "Bucky" were
discussing the good spots where
they had . seen so many
groundhogs and I heard many
tales of how good they were
with the .22.
Anyway they started' down a
little road leading to a mill
where at one time they had had
a water wheel turning to drive
ctlp
their grain -grinding machines.
The dam was overflowing — and
the stream had cut ,several new
courses— one of which was right
across the road — and ripping
along at a fine rate. "Don't go
thro' — turn around." I pleaded.,
Buck gets out and looks at the
width and depth of the stream
and says, "no problem!" That's
all they needed and in' we went.
A great puff of steam shot out
from under the hood -and the'
motor stopped — guess where —
in the MIDDLE of that stream!
Well, I didn't hold back the
LLI-told-you-soes" but that just
added to the fun. So they didn't
think it was so deep, etc., etc.,
and' so ewe sat — never closer to a
fishing spat before — and no
fishing rod.
After many tries to start' the=
motor, the driver crawled .out
onto the hood and jumped,.
across to the dry ' road. After
getting chunks of wood to stand
on, he investigated the problem
under the hood. The distributor
was .soaking wet — and a few
other things but "it will dry with
the heat of the motor." So we
sat — and not a soul' in 'sight.
"This is usually a busy -road."..
".'Yes, but everyone but us Kew
it was flooded!"
I tried to talk someone into
wiping the plugs and things to
help them dry faster. After lust
about running the battery down,
he decided to take my advice:
"Well, I couldn't see any
dampness ' in the distributor, or
anything, but .I hope you're
satisfied now,- - try it," The
motor started at once. 'What a
relief, I could just see us sitting
there for the night!
This will make another tale
for those two when they get
together and have a big laugh
-about how close they were to
some good fishing.

scholarship'
for athletic
Three .clinics and a $5,100
scholarship program for club
coaches highlight. the Legion's
national track and field planks for
this year.
The first clinic, for 60
promising *young athletes, will be',
held at r McMaster University, .
Hamilton:from June 30 to Ju1y4.
5.
It is the fourth such clinic'
desigined to give top instruction
to athletes of promise. Many of,,
the graduates of past clinics such'
as Jay Dahlgren, Wilf Wedmann
and Joan Fisherhave already
done' well in international •
competition. .
Geoffrey Dyson returns from
England to direct the athlete
clinic. He ' will also be here` fore
the 8th national clinic for'
coaches at the University of
Guelph from August' 19 to 29,
This year the Legion tries a
$5,100 experiment' in order to
bolster. the number of club'
coaches attending the clinic. It
will provide both. transportation
and tuition for 60 club coache
who qualify for a general al
events course.
All clinics are conducted with
$5,000
grogram
financial assistance from the
Department of National Health
and .Welfare. But eoaches
attending Guelph normally are
expected to pay an $85
registration fee. , This . will be
waived for club coaches only,
with these fees being paid by the
Legion.
Another 100 coaches will be
accepted for an advance course,
which will be given in. both
English and French. For these
there will be a registration fee
but in all cases, transportation
will be provided.
Chairman Fred O'Brecht,
Durham, explained: "Most of
our previous candidates' have
been teachers or were somehow
involved 0 in education... They_
usually found. it easy to come to
our clinic, and ; I , hope they
continue to do so. They've
produced good results! But we
also, want to make it easier for
the oach who can't get time off
Without sacrificing pay or
holidays. This is the object of -
the scholarship or grant."
The third Legion clinic will
be held this winter, probably in
-late December. Details of it will
be announced -later.
