How to Get
More Miles
Per Gallon
Two drivers of the same au-
tomobile may get different gas
mileage due to the differences
in :driving habits. Other fac-
tors include driving conditibns
and mechanical condition of
the automobile.
It costs almost 50% more tc
drive 80 mph than it does tc
drive 50 rnph. Cost of driving
60 mph is 25% higher than
cost of driving 30 mph.
• Wet driving conditions:
Slowing down under wet or
snowy conditions conserves
fuel. -Vet-pavement can reduce
mileage by 1 mile per gallon.
• When parked, turn off en-
gine. One minute "of idling uses
more fuel than restarting uses.
• Starting. and • stopping;;
Avoid "jack rabbit" starts, sud-
den stopping and racing on the
green light.
. • Windy conditions. Drive
slower, if you're interested in
better fuel. economy.

Here are some suggestions
on care and ineehanical con-
dition of your car for better
fuel economy:
• Use good grade of gaso-
line recommended by the man-
ufacturer of your automobile.
• Be sure the thermostat
isn't stuck in • the open • posi-
tion. A warm-rnn
uing engine
is more efficient (uses less fuel)

• Be sure tires are inflated
properly.
• Balance and align tires.

use your cleaner/wax first and
spray over . it . Nixtirh plain auto
wax. Then spray ` a chrome
protector on your fenders and
other metalwork.
An aerosol windshield wash-
er is next — antifreeze addi-
tives make this another dou-
ble -duty product -- and it's
time for the finishing touches.
There are aerosol cleaners for
almost every type of uphol-
stery, and a . tire cleanar to
brighten up those whitewalls.
Teflon spray -glide can be
helpful in dozens of places —
window frames, hood, trunk
and door Patches, accelerator,
brake and clutch pedals and
many others. Finally,` tuck a
car deodorizer spray into your
glove Compartment and you're
ready to roll.
Or are you? Did you remem-
ber all the aerosol safety prod-
ucts that add the extra plus to
your own safe -driving? A fire
—extinguisher is important; and
an aerosol tire inflator so easy
a wom'an can use it might be
a "lifesaver" for night -driving.

Ahem. Do you have, trouble
starting, your engine in cold
weather? Spray some starting
fluid into the carburetor and
listen *to it turn over. Defog-

a must, and the latest aerosol
item on the automotive shelves
is a traction spray for the
tires, to drive yourself out of
that snowbaVk.
Aerosols can handle almost
all your car care, except per.
haps to drive to the service
station and fill up the tank.

In certain respects the auto-
motive service man and the
family doctor have much in
common. One notable similar-
ity:is in the problem of inter-
preting the patient's com-
plaints. Often, it is not easy
for a person to describe his
body's ailments, .or the ail-
ments of his car.
In neither case is the pa-
tient expected to do his own
diagnosing, but in both cases
it helps when the doctor or °
mechanic has some descrip-:,y
tive information with which
to begin his symptomatic an-
alysis.
Independent Garage Own-
,ers of America offer some ad-
vice for car owners regarding
the portrayal and interpreta-
tion of their car troubles Most
mechanical problems follow
set behaviorial patterns, they
say, and often it is easier for
the pwnerato observe and rec-
ognize these characteristics
than it is for the mechanic.
Some problems, for example,
occur only in wet weather;
others disappear in dampness.
An elusive engine miss may
come and go under certain
specific conditions and a' real
tipoff to your mechanic may
be.. the circumstances under
which that miss occurs. Is it
always on a heavy pull? Or
when the car is first started in
the morning? Or when it gets
hot?
. The most critical clues to
car troubles are:
ROAD SURFACES ... is the
symptom more 'noticeable on
asphalt or concrete? Wash-
board? High crowned road. or
flat?
SPEED ... this has a bear-
ing on most diagnoses.

A *ell -maintained battery
that hasn't outlived its useful-
ness should not cause starting
problems. More likely. ,some
other electrical component is
at fault and is draining the
-battery power. For example,
faulty wiring, warn spark
plugs or malfunctioning dis-=
tributor may be overworking
the battery during starting.
As'a result the battery wears
down to 'a point that it may
seem dead. The alert service
man will look beyond the bat-
tery as the cause of the start-
ing failure, especially when he
is reminded to do so by the
customer.
To keep your battery in top
