Fertilizer
discounted
six per cent
The Ontario Farmers Union
today announced a . further
discount of six percent in the
"price of' its fertilizer supplied by
the two companies in Western
Ontario operating under
contract with the. OFU. The
price was re -negotiated, by the.
Purchasing Committee of the
OFU, Peter Milec of Ruthven
and Otto Prues df Elmwood:
This six percent discount, in
addition to all previous
negotiated 4discounts in the
agreement is retroactive on all
general (grain) fertilizer supplied •
other than tobacco fertilizer,
delivered under the QFU
contract out of -Western Ontario.
Negotiations on other inputs
are continuing. Mr. Milec,
Chairmaof the OFU
Purchasing Committee said that
this,latest move will save Ontario
• farmers thousands of dollars and
make the Ontario 'Farmers'
Union contract even more
attractive.
Walter -Miller, president of the
OFU said, "The collective
bargaining _progjam is just
starting to•show it real potential
with - farmers using their
economic power." He saki,
"Many other contracts are
pending and as more farmers
participate, better deals will •be
made." Many farmers already
have. taken membership as a
result of the OFU programs and
the outlook is encouraging: ---
Otto Prues, Jr. president, and
director of District 1, who has
been an active member of the
Purchasing Committee says,
"The real 'strength of the farmer
using economic power will be
much more obvious when we
organize our National Farmers'
Union and bargain on a National
basis." "This," he said, "we are
looking forward to and in the
meantime, we're in a stepping
stone process.M The Farmers'
Union colled'tive bargaining
program to improve prices and
reduce. the cost of production
holds the only hope of rsurviVal
for .Canadian farmers from coast
to coast. With the Farmers'
Union, farmers will he in
control, without any
government influence.
