e. • r Significance of prayer A book of "Prayers" by Michel Quoist has become very popular since it was first - translated into English " and published by Sheed and Ward, New , York in 1963. The Lambeth Conference of Anglican Bishops held in 1968 made specific and favorable reference to_ it in the official report.. It has.attracted the' attention of many casual readers, who have been trying- to find some Significance to the prayer' life. Michel Quoist has not written a series of formal prayers in the stereotype of liturgical language, but rather has taken experiences of everyday events as the theme for his meditations. All'the facts which heuses are authentic. m In his introduction] he reminds the reader that "God addresses us through 'every even t; even the most insignificant." A glance at the table of contents indicates that the source of many of the meditations is indeed insignificant events: the the much. simpldr style of the telephone, the wire fence, the 20th century, stands in the same brick, the subway,'" the tractor. tradition as bonne,,„. ,in a ham,.. One cannot help but compare Quoist with John Donne, the 17th century English' writer, •whose Devotions arose out of the immediate and ' simple experiences of his illness. Donne's Devotions are a masterpiece of classical literature and language.'
