Consumers' Association of Canada --, • {
Warm weather will soon be
here. Or call it soft drink timer
And 'more and more people will
be spending more and *more
money for instant garbage.
Your first reaction will be, "I
don't buy garbage!" -- but you
do, and Consumers' Association
o'f Canada would like to point
out that every time you buy the
nota -refundable, , disposable
bottle of pop you are paying for
garbage.
The "one-way" bottles were
first introduced just over three
years ,ago,largely due to demands
by the retail traade, who did riot
want the inconvenience and cost
of storing empties, as well as the
extra labor involved in sorting
and, making refunds for deposits.
Are you voluntarily paying
higher prices to save money for
supermarket operators'.?'
. In other words, in many cases
you are. paying forthe privilege
of not returning the bottles. But
do you realize how much' you •
are paying for this privilege'.
Think about it fora moment.
When f h the sci)t:t

`drinks, you fill up your garbage
can with "throw -away" bottles
and the city disposal trucks pick
them .up. So, one might ask,
what's the problem'?
Today, garbage defies present
disposal facilities: In the past
three years, garbage has doubled;
so naturally it takes more. men,,
to .handleit. Before long, ,ciitie9

who . pays for the increased
manpower- and new equipment?
Could it be you - the taxpayer?
As the magazine Canadian
Packaging points out: "During
1968, soft drink sales accounted
for about 2,6 million gross •of
NR (non -returnable) bottles,
about 374,4.00.000 units. A 60
percent increase. will take that
total to nearly 600 million units,
,by _the _end of 1969." •
Then again there are the
disposable bottles tossed along
roadsides, in park areas and in
wading pools.. Once a returnable ANSWER: The answer-t/o that is

dividend, however small, but can be done. They could be

bottlers and supermarkets to
accept social responsibility in
this area? . After all, this is just
another form of pollution!
In the matter of "consumer
choice" that we are supposed to
have, it is becoming more and
more difficult to choose because
many supermarkets stock only
the non-returnables. Consumers
should let our supermarket and
soft drink bottlers now we
aren't happy abut this
situation. .One way is to
patronize the store that really
gjves you a choice. Even if you
don't object' to the first payment
on disposable' garbage - the
bottle itself - how about those
increased taxes','
The Consumers' Association
of Canada would like to suggest
that you let your voice be, heard
in the marketplace, or accept the -
fact that you will continue to
pay dearly for "instant 'garbage."
We. would like your views on
the subject. Write: "Disposable",

the other day, just after a bad
snow storm, . I ' was__g'oing down
the highway which had just been
plowed and salted - by the
Department of Highways when I
came to a big pile of snow which
looked like it had been pushed
there by someone who had just
. plowed out his driveway. When I
struck it, I lost control of my
car. Lucky for me there was no°
. one coming or I would have hit

pieces; and they must be paid.
Last year, municipal
organizations of four provinces
urged their respective
governments to prohibit the sale
and. distribution of disposable,
non-refundable bottles now
being foisted on the consuming
public. It was declared that they.
were a serious health hazard and
a garbage problem.
The bottle makers feel they
are being unfairly accused of
being the major contribution to
the littering of highways .and
parks. They agree there is a litter
problem but that critics do not
base their arguments on facts.
They claim the real solution to
litter is public education, stricter
enforcement of anti -litter laws
and adequate collection and
disposal facilities.
Now, Why should the public
have to pay for the disposal of
the extra garbage that should
rightfully be the responsibility
cr, the manufacturer and retailer.
