r__ IRON FOR -HEALTH
As
•
For good health and vitality,
make -sure that your family gets
•a weekly supply of iron -rich
foods. This vital mineral is
necessary to maintain the body's
health, reminds the Food
Council, Ontario Department of
Agriculture and Food.•
It's easy to add iron to regular
meals. For example, spread
molasses on bread in place of
jam, and use molasses often in
cooking. Or - add a handful- of
raisins or other, dried fruit to the
lunch box, and use dried peas •
and beans regularly in soups and
supper dishes. For a real
guarantee of sufficient irbn,
serve' liver or other organ meats
at least once a week.
) Iron deficiency can result in a
tired feeling,, paleness, and` more
seriously, a loss of appetite
leading to other health disorders.
* * *
Cooking it right in the first
place will eventually save you
time and money. Properly
prepared food satisfies the
appetite, and everyone cleans his
plate without urging. This means
less cleaning up, when the meal is
over. . -

TIPS
ELECTRICITY
Electrical outlets and worn
extension cords can. be deadly.
Keep outlets plugged or covered
and cords repaired.
Purchase only toys which suit
a child's age. Don't give
complicated toys to young
children. Inspect toys regularly
and care -fully for possible wear
or damage which may prove
dangerous. Check play
equipment for broken edges,
splinters and safety of operation.
Encourage older children to
keep their toys in places where
younger ones can't locate and
misuse'them.
CUTS
Scissors, knives and other
sharp utensils should be kept
from small children. Teach
children to walk, not run, when

CHEST X—RAY
Everybody agrees that chest
x-rays are essential in the
detection of early tuberculosis,
early lung cancer, and other ,
silent, serious lung andheart'
troubles. Early detection is vital
becausethe chances of
controlling or correcting these
conditions are greater when
treatment can be started early.
There is no question about
the value of chest x-rays but
'how often should they be taken?
The Ontario Medical
Association says every teen-ager
should have a chest x-ray and
tuberculin test before he leaves
school. If these are negative,
then there need be no Moore'
chest x-rays ` until age' "'40''
However, a tuberculin test
should be taken annually. If the
tuberculin test is positive, then a
chest x-ray should " be taken
annually.
At age 40, chest x-rays every
year should begin. The hazard of
tuberculosis, lung cancer and
other chest disease, becomes
much greater at this stage in life
- particularly for men..
