The cars with the
electronic brains.
They're still Volkswagens
at heart
.:fi: rr fix:;: •.L
Even though the 1969 VW. Squareback,
Fastback and Notchback sedans are the only cars .
in -the world with mputerized 'Pcrelinjtctiow as standard-et'.u'rptnent,
underneath it all they're still humble, hardworking Volkswagens.
You still get an air-cooled engine in the rear that doesn't need water
or antifreeze.
You still get around 31 miles to a gallon of gas.
And despite other innovations like
a new double joint rear axle .and
a heafed rear window, we've
still made sure that you get a car
that .isn't -.too smart for its own good.
Because we wouldn't want it said
that we let our electronic brains go
to our heads.

When a paint conipany fi-
nally came up••.,with' a superior
anti -fouling paint for 'boats, i1
guaranteed its better mouse-
trap this way: "It will keep
your boat bottom completely
free of growth for a full year,
or replacement free."
The paint,ompany exec-
utives knew, w uld do the job.
Lab tests and boat tests proved
it. But would people be,
tempted to take unfair advan-
tage of the guarantee?
At the headquarters of
Chilton Paint Company, 109
Fifteenth Avenue, College
Point, New York, the president
of the 104 -year-old paint com-
pany waited to see what, would
happen.
Morality triumphed, Many
boaters bought the paint, a
year has gone by, and only two.
have asked for, a make -good on
the guarantee. Each, it is sus-
pected, either scraped off the
paint on a sand bar or applied
it incorrectly in the first place.
Still, • each received a tele-
phoned apology from William'
R. Martens, president of the
firm that makes "Super Drip -
less No. 8," the name given' td
the better mousetrap that
didn't yield a rat.
