The Goderich Signal-Star, 1969-04-24, Page 9' • • • Sleek, snugly and powerful` -that's the Pike - Ontario's strikingest Meek, power"ful and sn9rly, the iaorthern pike is a savage among game fish, and nowhere is the species more concentrated than in the Canadian province of Ontario. There is, no way of telling but safe to assume that this torpedo -shaped scrapper Anhabits at least half the province's quarter -million lakes. Unlike the elusive, tough -to -catch muskellunge - its first -cousin, pike in Ontario are as numerous as bl4egills and crappies. found in less -exciting THE PERFECT GIFT, fromThe Family A Family Riiig. North American waters. Although they are fierce fighters, capable of staging a .thrilling battle for veteran aficionados, nrortherns paradoxically are an easy fish to hook and even the youngest of anglers often bring home their full daily limit of six., And fancy tackle isn't necessary. A minnow; even a dead smelt on a hardline in the grasp of a near -toddler has brought many a lunker to his fate. Beau-ty of ft all' is that the entire family can get into the act' since many of the better pike waters can be fished 'from the banks, by rowing a ' punt along, the shoreline of - a sheltered bay, or by drifting in a canoe down sdme quiet river. The pike has the appetite of a teenager and' will ravenously strike 'almost any bait passing his lair. Not only are they given to cannibalism, they even leap out after birds, small animals and reptiles to round out their diet. But while greed is their failing, flaskyy spoons and spinners are their folly . - certainly the- best of ,the wide selection of lures anglers use to tempt them into striking. A medium -length casting rod fitted with a sturdy, level -wind reel and 20 -pound test line is ideal gear for pike. But far more fun is to be had with spinning tackle, for nothing is more exciting to do battle with one of these fighting giants on the end of a gossamer line: Their razor-sharp teeth can easily " slice a fishing line, so a strong wire leader is advised. It's also a good idea to include a pair of long -nose pliers in the tackle box for removing hooks from their `gator-like jaws. Pike don't give up easy. After slamming the lure with an arm -jarring , strike, they'll tear line from the spool in frenzied dashes for freedom, often churning and thrashing on the surface until finally subdued by het or gaff. But because these highly prized trophies are so numerous' and so easily taken in Ontario, the compassionate sportsman returns his catch with delicate care, especially the smaller ones which are inclined° to' be bony. Pike, however, do have white, flaky flesh • and larger ones with proper filleting make for delicious eating. The prolific pike spawns in rivers, streams and shalloW bays as soon as the ice has melted in early spring. Rest of the year they normally make weed beds a " a • 1 The birthstones of 'each of her children are delicately set in an attractive gold ring. Three styles to choose from.
