OCEANLINER SINKS QF°F THE COAST So begins "A Spring in the Desert" (Doubleday, April 17), a new novel by C. J. Eustace. Among these who lost their lives on the boat were a honeymoon couple blissfully in love; a successful; self-made businessman; a ' voluptuous, wealthy widow; a crusty old patrizrch; and a Papal emissary on a confidential mission. One young man, Stephen Russell; among . the handful of survivors cannot accept his godd fortune. He -'becomes 'obsessed with the need to know why these people diedwhile he was spared. Eustac-e delves into the lives of Russell's fellow travellers'to find the answer, and in the process he weaves a narrative 'of remarkable human drama through which Itis character becomes more keenly attuned to the spiritual responsibilities of life.' Kirkus Service says: "Mr. Eustace tells his story in a' grave and courteous fashion with religious implications and mystical fibrillations." A British ,iipmigrant to Canada, C. J. : Eustace was president of the publishing house of J. M. Dent for many years until his retirement. "A Spring in the Desert" is his' third novel. He has also written three volumes of philosophy.
