Packaged soups add interest
nightmare to economy supper
year old
- -DEAR ANN LANDERS:
1: am a girl, 17, and my life is
a nightmare. If it weren't for
four younger kids in the family
I'd walk out of here tomorrow.
Dad' is drunk every, night of
his life. Mom has had a nervous
breakdown and is very forgetful. -
My 14 -year-old sister and I do
the housework, washing, , ironing
and choking ' 1ecause Mom is
always jn bed with terrible
headaches. Dad says her illnesses
are phony and that her lousy
disposition has driven him to
drink. Mom says his drinking has
rumed her Iife and 'made her
sick.
I quit school last fall because
Dad lost his job and his
unemployment compensation
wasn't enoughto feed and
clothe us. I feel as though I'm
cracking up. Please tell me what -
to do. — ALICE
DEAR ALICE:
The --first -thing--you-should--do
is get back in school. The few
• dollars you are making aren't
worth the sacrifice. Next call
Family Service. They will send a'
caseworker out to evaluate the
situation . and provide help and
guidance.
It doesn't matter whether
your dad drinks because your
mother has a lousy disposition
or. your mother has a lousy
disposition because your dad
drinks. The. important thing is
that they . both get.-.help„,,,so you
and your brother and sisters can
have a decent life.

DEAR ANN LANDERS: ,
After a bitter , divorce last
year, my. husband remarried
ahnost instantly. This hurt me
deeply:' 3.,
Several months later, I met a•
wonderful man — married,
unfortunately, but in the process
of obtaining a divorce, Or so he
•said. I devoted .all my time to
him because I felt certain that~...
things would work, out for us.
Last week my lover informed
me that his wife refuses to
cooperate — that she is being
vindictive and greedy, A divorce
is out of the question. He
suggested however, that we
continue to see each other .and
be a little more discreet.
His suggestion did not appeal
to me in the least and I told him
goodbye. Now I'm in such a
state 6f depression I can barely
make it through the day. I'm not
wiring for advice. I want to give
some. Please tell all divorced
w..amen In stent clear of married
men especially those who say
they're getting a divorce. A man
who is "getting a divorce” is still
married,___ and "I'll bet you a
bucket full of tears he'll stay
that way. — BEEN HAD
DEAR HAD:
Welcome to the Club. You
have more sorority sisters than
you would possibly imagine.
Your .letter was a very fine
sermon and I thank you for ie.
Confidential to ,. Crushed:
Nonsense. Every mother alive
has called each of her children
by another child's name.
Sometimes a mother will go
through three or four names
° before she hits. the right one.
Stop looking for psychological
implications. You are suffering
heedlessly.
An aquarium provides'"' a
unique form of gardening during
the winter months, say .
horticulturists with the. Ontario'
Department of Agriclr'lture and
Food.
Even a ' three -gallon aquarium
provides enough space for a
small collection of water plants.
In addition to a glass tank, the
aquarium gardener needs an air
pump and filter, a lamp and
• shade, and coarse sand for the
bottom of the tank. Stone and
sand are available in many bright
colours.
The selection and
arrangement of the plants are
'most important foran-aquarium:
Plants such as corkscrew,
Amazon swordplant, Anacharis,
Cabomba, and ' common
Vallisneria are popular and
attractive.
Just as in - outd\oo

Ta` ler' plants should be at the
back. Short ones look best. in
front. Medium-sized -plants
placed at the-Sides"fr'rne" the
picture. Groups of plants look
better than single ones. Use of
more, than three or four species
will . create, a hodgepodge effect.
Use a pretty rock, a piece of
_pottery, _ or a sea shell as- a
centerpiece.
Place well -washed sand in •the
bottom first. A piece of paper
placed over the sand•will prevent
the sand from being washed,

added.. Plats are . most easily
- placed when thetank is just over

GODERICH'S OWN • . .
We're always hearing about
"Blue Monday” ... but many a•
homemaker finds that Saturday
is the "off night" when it comes
to planning a supper to interest
her family. Thrown off their
usual schedule, Dad and the .
children are hungrier, than usual,
because of outdoor activities ...
or else they've been loafing and
snacking indoors all afternoon.,
and supper needs to ' be
tempting.
Mother, too, lacks real
enthusiasm for cooking a big
-„,.meal, ,even if . she can get
everyone to the table at once.
And the budget, this time of
year, often finds,Saturday
supper skimped in faor of the
Sunday roast!
One answer to the cry for
something different is a simple
hot dish, given added appeal by
interesting foreign flavoring, and
served with cold cuts as a change
from hot 'meats. For dessert, try
serving fruit and- -a variety of
cheeses instead of the f'more
usual. pudding, pie or preserves,
All ingredients of a meal like this
can be kept on hand in the
-refrigerator -and cupboard to be
prepared on a moment's notice.
