!NTINE'S DAY
Vale» Ire's Day, February

conning of Christianity, the
holiday was named in honor of
Bishop Valentine, of
Italy, who used to give , flowers

ROMANCE
•
Tuaditionally, the popular
way of saying "I love you" on
this occasion has been the giving,
of red roses, heart -shaped
chocolate boxes, lacy greeting
cards with overly -poetic verses.
So, this year, why not break
away front tradition and send a
lovely ariaingemeht of tulips ‘.or
any other of the Springtie
flowers already available at all
florist shops. And, although
wives 'and future brides still
believe in romance the women
also think in a practical vein.
However, HTD florists can solve
this problem as, well as that of
gift wrapping by combining'
flowers with any particular gift,:
a teapot', .a can opener, perfume,
scissors,' etc., that could b com
a momento for several yeaic
s.
On the other hand, St.
'Valentine's Day is not only for
lovers, parents and good, old
friends should, be thought of.
And .if the beloved one happens
to live in a distant city or a
foreign country, your florist will
be of particular help in sending
the Spri ng flower -gift
arrangement.
-FLOWERS AND GAMES
This festival of romance day
is also the appropriate time to
changee atmosphere in your
' home by enhancing it with
"Spring in advance" flowers,
such as tulips, • daffodils, and
hyacinths in, all the rooms. It is
also the very special day to
throw a, party that your guests
will "love". The theme, should
be .both sophisticated and
sentimental with old ban Cupid
motifs and moods pacing the
aenifig:"' Plan a few games: a 20
minute contest on Valentine
making with white hard paper
doilies', a supply of children's
crayons, red ribbon and
scotchtape: a variation of
charades with "great lovers"
themes.
Whether +.PB '"prepare • the
now very' -popular, buffet or a
classic "sit;in" dinner, choose a
white linen tablecloth that you
can, adorn with red hearts and
cupid motifs„ or a garland of red
and white tulips. Add prestige
•
with an attractive centerpiece:
tall; large or small, depending on
the table's dimensions.
Especially for this day, serve
heart -shaped foods and red and
pink food to say "Be my
Valentine": shrimps, lobster,
ham, salami and other red
delicatessen meats, heart tart
shells filled as desired with pink
or red food;., heart croustades;
heart -shaped cake with fluffy
white frosting decorated ' with
red hearts an4 cupids. or red gum,
drops; heartoshaped sandwiches

pretty lacy doilies garnished
with ` hearts. Add carrot thin
strips to celery sticks or fill these ,
sticks with creamy pink cheese -
of ' white creamy cheese
sprinkled with paprika. - ,
If you are serving a formal
dinner, of course your menu can
go as far as your budget and
your culinary talents will permit.
Then, of course, the formal dress .4
is also required. But for a fun
intimate buffet style party; yvhy
not -ask your 'guests to, get into
costumes of great lovers such as
Antony and Cleopatra, Romeo
and Juliet, Robert and Elizabeth
Browning, the Duke of Windsor
and his Duchess, or more recent
ones like Jackie Kennedy and
her Greek multi=millionaire
husband, Grace Kelly and
Rainier, of ,Monaco, the
Schumanns, the Curies, etc. Or,
invite -married couples to come
"just as they were dressed the
night of the great proposal". It -is
good for both fun and nostalgia.
• One thing you. must not
forget is to get everybody in the
mood by choosing • in advance
romantic music for,, your record
player. As hostess, there is_also
another "must That is starting
the' conversation on a• romantic
theme: ^ great )overs, ' stones of
old castles that still tell visitors
or seers of great romances. -
